Hello all - Wondering this for a family member who is one month post sleeve surgery. They are concerned they have not lost weight in the past 2 weeks. He is on solid foods and trying to navigate getting in the Protein requirements and is averaging about 700-800 calories daily. The nutritionist told them to increase calories to 1400 a day by snacking throughout the day. Has anyone had this experience? The advice to increase calories is confusing? Thank you!.

All the programs are very very different for what foods they suggest. I’m at 2 months postop and I’m at about 400-700 calories every day and losing about 2.5-3.5 lbs a week. How far is this person from goal weight? Have they lost a great deal already? They might be at a stall. Snacking seems like a not great idea TBH. Maybe increase Water and exercise?

Thank you for your reply. He has lost about 40 pounds total from pre-op to post-op. The nutritionist suggested his body may be in a protective type mode and suggested to up his calorie intact. He is about 150 pounds from goal weight total. He is drinking the recommended amount of Water. Maybe increasing exercise or type would be helpful as he walking only.

Hi - I had the same problem around the same time. My doctor had me on 1000 to 1200 per day and I was not losing weight. I did some research and found that other doctors and nutritionists said that can happen if you are not eating enough calories for your activity level so I increased my calories to 1400 per day! I not only felt better i started dropping weight. I have been losing 3 pounds per week since I increased my calories. I am a very active person. I also make sure I have some kind of snack (focusing on protein) every 3 hours and I drink 50-64 oz ( I know that is light) of Water per day. My surgery was on may 3rd, 2018 and I am down 43 lbs since April 17th when I started my liquid diet. That averages 3.9lbs per week.

i know it is strange to be able to eat so many calories and still lose weight. It's nice not being hungry! Best of luck to your family member.

The nutritionist told him that he needs to introduce snacking and take in more calories. It seems so counter intuitive to add more calories and this seems like such a different balance and science for everyone.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
