Drinking - just wondering

Why is it so important to wait 30 minutes before and after you ate with drinking anything? Also, what about when you have a Protein Shake, do you have to wait to drink fluids before and after too?

From what my Surgeon explained to me, if you drink 30 minutes prior you won’t be able to get all the Protein in your meal because you will get full faster. And if you drink within an hour or eating you will just flush the food through the pouch and into your intestines. This will cause you to lose the “full” feeling and will cause you to want to eat more.

I was actually told at my 3 month appointment that research has shown it doesn’t matter if you drink before you eat but to wait 30 minutes after. I’ve been drinking before meals since that day with no issues whatsoever. As for Protein Shakes try to stay clear of them unless you have no other option. I quit drinking Protein after my restrictions were lifted & have had no problems getting my protein in each day. I do have Protein Powder available in case I need it for whatever reason. I eat lean protein & produce fruits/veggies almost exclusively but I do have a slice of pizza or a cheeseburger with no bun once a month. I’ll never get in the habit of eating something like that more than that again but once a month is definitely not going to do damage & I feel that I deserve it. I workout hard & log everything daily. Best of luck!

How do you get all your Protein in? I drink 5 oz of a shake per day and the rest with eggs, cheese, Beans, meat etc. i get about 45-55 g of protein in like that.

I eat meat & produce & on occasion a Protein Bar. Try out the MyFitnessPal app & start researching sources of protein. Always eat your protein first before other foods. There are also Birdseye protein blends packs that are delicious. I get them at Walmart. You can also eat nuts. I average 90 grams of protein per day. The only things I eat during the day is Protein. I know what to eat but I think I don’t get enough in during on meal. I am only 7.5 weeks post OP so hope it’ll get better.

I agree with you, Minerva! All I can get in is Protein, and that still leaves me at 45-55 grams a day. Those Birdseye protein blends look great, but they have stuff we aren't supposed to have: corn, grains, Beans, etc. Nuts are off the table too. I drink half a Protein Shake a day, and I want to do a full one for the extra protein, but I'm trying to make the transition to food. It's tough! I do drink half a Clear Protein Drink most days, which is 10 grams of protein -- worth it to me, despite the 45 calories. If you haven't tried them, I highly recommend them. Premier Protein makes them.

Corn can be tricky anyway, some of our new stomachs can tolerate it and some can't to start off. I'm 11 weeks and mine says no. I get 70-90 grams per day. I almost always add a Protein powder, I add Beans, low-fat cheeses to eggs and whatever i can. I'm the beginning i think we all just eat our protein and try to eat some kind of veggies, I barely get them in. I eat Greek yogurt and add a scoop of protein powder to it. I have to hit 70+ and right now if I need a shake (blech) or powder, I'll do it. I'll also eat last night's chicken etc for Breakfast.

I only wait the 30 minute after rule. I don't bother waiting before. I'm pretty sure that's what my program taught, either way, that's what I've been doing since surgery. I never waited for shakes either or any liquids.

My NUT says that the 30 before is nonsense, only the 30 after matters

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
