Tarabull33 0 Posted July 2, 2018 Anyone have severe reflux preoperatively? I am scheduled for RNY in October. Currently on Prilosec 40mg twice daily and take Zantac mid day 150. Wake up choking on reflux 5/7 nights per week even with head of bed elevated 45 degrees. Wondering if RNY will give me some relief? Or allow me to get off these meds? James Marusek 5,244 Posted July 2, 2018 I had good luck with the surgery but your gerd is much more severe than mine. I was still on Prilosec for the first year after surgery. My doctor said it was to help with the healing process. After the first year I discontinued it and have been fine since. I am 5 years post-op. 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
magpie26 244 Posted July 3, 2018 I have gerd from one of the medications i take I'm on prilosec? Omeprozole? For it. But I had the sleeve, it's not worse unless I eat super acidic foods, but they've doubled my dose because I'm one of the lucky few that experience hunger all the time after surgery when the grhelin is supposed to be gone, so extra acid reducers may help with hunger. I'm sorry for your gerd. I heard it gets better with your type of surgery . 1 1 Tarabull33 and Frustr8 reacted to this
Bryn910 519 Posted July 8, 2018 I had GERD ever since I had my sleeve in 2011. I had a revision from sleeve to bypass in May & haven’t had GERD since. 1 1 Tarabull33 and Frustr8 reacted to this
workinit 6 Posted July 9, 2018 Hi, I am considering going from the sleeve to bypass due to GERD . I am just starting researching. Can you answer a few questions for me? Is your weight loss about the same as if you had a virgin bypass or is it different due to the previou surgery? Is is much different from the Sleeve? How much have you lost? Did you have to go back and forth with insurance to cover it? Did you have to meet the same requirements? Thank you for your time. 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
Frustr8 7,886 Posted July 29, 2018 I am going to have an RnY September 5th. I am currently on Dexilant 60 mg for GERD, gastritis and keep Hector, my teeny tiny gastric ulcer sound asleep. However I am not an revision but a virgin Bypass. Still want to be friends?
KCRogers2012 11 Posted August 22, 2018 My GERD was one of the primary reasons my doctor suggested RNY. It has made a 100% difference! I no longer have reflux. I never wake up from it at night, never have heartburn, don’t need the Rx meds I took previously. It was a life changer! Mine was as severe as yours, and now it is gone. From what I read, that is not the case with VSG, but the RNY really helped me.
