I am very new to this whole lap-band idea and have not yet decided if it's for me. I have read about everything I can find on the surgery, but would like some more information. First off let me tell you a little about myself. I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I was always bigger than the other girls in my class and my girl cousins. I can remember starting some "crazy" diet with my Mom when I was probably about ten. My Mom has never struggled with her weight and doesn't understand what it's like. I have taken prescription weight-loss drugs, tried every fad diet out there, and done Weight Watchers. I lost about 40 pounds over three years ago, but then met my wonderful boyfriend (who also loves food, but doesn't gain a pound) and my dieting and exercising went by the wayside. I've put the 40 and then some back on. I've also recently realized that I have a severe food addiction and binge eating disorder. I have not seeked and psychological help yet, I'm working on it, but live in a somewhat rural area. I have read that lap-band surgery is one treatment for binge eating, but I'm so afraid that I will just eat my way out of the band if I don't get the binge thing under control first. Has anoyone else recognized that they have the disorder and did the surgery stop it? Any suggestions?

I can tell you first off you need to get the binge eating under control. You can eat your way around the band and hurt yourself, so I would recommend getting help first. Most Drs will not band you if you have an eating disorder. I have never heard of the band as a treatment for binge eating, yes it does restrict you but you can still get around it!

I don't see how the band could treat binge eating. For two reasons. 1 - binge eating is psychological, and the band does nothing for the psychology (other than reinforcement, more on that).

On one side, you physically can't eat a lot, so it may seem like a good intervention. BUT when you eat more than your pouch can hold, or eat too quickly (as usually happens with binge eating), or don't chew well (as usually happens with binge eating), that's when the pain can come, and the act of having to bring up whatever won't go down. That process is not good for the band, and having to do it repeatedly is getting a lot of credit as a primary driver for band slips.

It would make sense to me for binge eating to be a contraindication.

I have taken prescription weight-loss drugs, tried every fad diet out there, and done Weight Watchers.
I see a lot of "gimmick" history - have you tried just reducing your calories, and what were the results? If you tried it and did not have success, what happened when you failed? (e.g. binging, gradual decline, etc.)

Do seek out a good therapist re: help with the es.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
