Starting real food

Recommended Posts

I had gastric bypass on June 20th. My surgeon seems to have a VERY different plan than most others. I was on Clear Liquids for 48 hours then was allowed full liquids and purees "as tolerated". I keep reading about the different stages everyone is on. My plan in all my paperwork says that after 2 weeks I can start regular food. So far this has been a breeze. The first few days after surgery were a big tough but I'm feeling great. Has anyone else have a plan that advances to real food this fast? I'm still planning on taking it slow and chewing like my life depends on it but I'm so ready to be eating normal food again.

There are a few on here who have had very different plans, that have allowed regular food much sooner than most.

My surgeon's plan is pretty traditional. But I progressed much faster than it allowed for, because of work travel. I realized that the "wining and dining" I have to do for my job was not compatible with a puree diet, and keeping my surgery private. So I moved into real food in week three, and had no issues then or since. I don't recommend people go outside of their Dr's plan, but it worked for me.

My surgeon had me on full liquids that afternoon, and I was on soft foods by week 2. I am finding that I still have issues with some soft foods (I just had a nasty episode with chicken that was a little too dry and some cod). I really haven't gotten too crazy yet because I still have a month of soft foods to go.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
