Pre-Op Mini Gastric Bypass Concerns

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am going outside US to get a mini gastric bypass (MGB) in August. After reading many posts, and watching YouTube videos I am really concerned about the following:

- Bile Reflux: It seems like a large percentage of MGBs get Bile Reflux and have to have another operation. Has that been the case for you?

- Foul-Smelling Stool: Is this the case for everyone? Does it get better after a while?

- Malnutrition: Does this happen to everyone and is taking Vitamins (multi, D3, B12) enough to fix this? What else are you taking to prevent malnutrition?

- After experiencing MGB, do you recommend MGB instead of RNY or sleeve?

Thank you in advance for your time and valuable replied.

Hi hk1100,

I had MGB survey outside the US on 12/12/16.

Bile Reflux - in my research before surgery, I found that most MGB patients do not suffer with bile reflux. Surgeons who are really experienced with MGB can make sure their patients don’t experience bile reflux.

Foul-smelling stool - all bariatric surgeries cause both foul-smelling stools and gas. For some people, taking Probiotics can help with that. But it is a trade off for being healthier.

Malnutrition - most MGB patients don’t suffer from malnutrition as long as they follow their surgeon’s post-op instructions. Other than vitamin patches, I’m not doing anything extra other than making sure I get my Protein and fluids.

I would recommend MGB surgery to anyone looking into having weight loss surgery.

GBLady41,

Thank you for your quick and thorough response.

I look forward to hearing from other MGBs.

Thanks again

I had MGB surgery 15 months ago with a very experienced surgeon. However, 8 months post-op I developed bile reflux. It is no joke, very painful, and has caused Barrett’s Esophagus. The only solution for me is the revise to an RNY this summer. I wish I had the RNY originally.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
