If you're on regular foods diet stage, do you observe the 30-30-30 (or 20-20-20) rule when some of your meals are liquid? i.e. You have some meals of solid foods, but also have a shake for Breakfast. Do you not drink for 30-minutes either side of the shake meal?

I'm asking because I'm good about real "mealtimes" but if I drink a Protein Water on my way into work, I tend to immediately make a cup of tea when it's gone. So, I was wondering if I need to set my timer after the Protein water.

I stick to the 30 / 30 rule as much as possible. What's the extra number for?

Ours was no drinking 30 min before or 30 after and limit eating time to 30. That's so you don't stretch out a meal for an hour and a half just to eat more.

Gottcha, the groups I went through training with weren't advised to take a set amount of time to eat, at least not after the first few days, just to wait 30 before and after. I do my best to stick to this now. And I just eat my meal as slow as feels right.

That said, I don't really consider the shakes a to be "food" since they are liquids (and were allowed on the liquid only diet sooooo) I don't wait the 30/30 usually with shakes.

That's kind of what I was thinking, but wanted to get a consensus. Thanks!

Do we know the reason for the 30 minutes before? I had two nutritionist tell me that you can drink before meals just not during or 30 minutes after. So what is with the 30 minutes before?

I have a shake every morning, and I do the same as you. I drink almost immediately afterwards. I guess I do this because in the hospital my surgeon said the 30 min rule didn't apply when I was on liquids. *shrugs* and my smoothie is a liquid...

I don't observe the 30 minutes prior rule though. I don't believe that was ever a part of my instructions. I specifically remember 30 minutes after. @SleeveinIL, what were we told? I typically don't finish a big glass of tea and eat though. I wouldn't want to eat if that was the case.

Our NUT said the 30-30-30 rule does not apply until you begin solid foods. The rationale at that point is to allow the stomach to become empty 30 min before you begin a meal. No liquids WITH the meal to prevent washing the food through the stomach before having time to begin digestion. Wait 30 min after for same - so nutrients can begin being extracted from the food for your body to use.

I was told all liquids can be grouped together but the full liquid diet is different then just liquids because it has semi solids so you observe the 30-30-30 rule with those (yogurt cream Soups cream of wheat etc. Anything you can eat with a spoon ) otherwise I take no breaks between drinking things. I go from coffee to Water to tea to water to tea etc.

I observe only the 30 minutes after and I don't apply it to Protein Drinks.

The rules apply to Protein Drinks. Otherwise, you could be grazing - and that is bad. Much of the Protein digestive process is done in the stomach. So let your stomach do it job. Water can help, but you need to consume your Protein Drink as a meal so as to not disturb the insulin production cycle. Your Protein Drink should have plenty of Water already with it, so you won't need more. If you drink water while still disgesting, you can change the pH level in your stomach and slow down disgesting. Protein is also supposed to increase a hormone that slows down the stomach emptying food. So, just give your stomach the time it needs for the protein.

For a 20 oz. Protein water, would you separate it into 5, 4-oz "servings"? I just drink the whole thing down. But, I guess, that would flush the first 16 oz. out of my stomach.

Not sure, I avoided Protein Water because of that. I would drink it as best you can and consider the whole thing as a meal/snack and count it as part of your daily water. My guideline for protein drinks speed was the same as water, 8 oz in 20 minutes. I just would not immediately follow it up with more water.

Thanks, something to think about.

I just noticed your weight loss total - CONGRATS! That is awesome, although it was really unkind of the scale to hold back that last .10!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
