HI Everyone,

I have to go in for some sort of sleep study later in July. Has anyone else had to do this?

They are trying to determine if you have sleep apnea. You may have shown signs of snoring. If your sleep study determines that you have sleep apnea, they will probably require that you obtain and use a CPAP device prior to surgery in order to minimize the risk of complications from the surgery.

Apnea isn't always weight related. I know a few folks that are sub 200 that have severe apnea.

Tips for the sleep study, bring something to help you sleep, you will more than likely be wired up with electrodes all over your body, face and scalp. So something to help you fall asleep while you are covered in pads, glue, wires, straps and have someone watching you on camera while you ATTEMPT to sleep... A blind fold might help as well since there are usually lights all over the room as well that might keep you awake if you have a light sensitivity.

any sort of sleep aid really. They typically don't care because they NEED you to be as asleep as possible so they can track your sleep stages, REM and of course your apnea events. Which they can't do if you can't sleep.

Also they will let you try out several different masks. Make sure you choose one that is comfortable otherwise sleeping might be a challenge.

^THIS^ So much... BE PICKY! Take your time too, you want to be 100% sure you'll be comfortable with the device if you do have to wear on.

Amen! I wore one that pushed my nose back too much and it was sore for several days afterwards. I learned the difficult way!

Its very true. My husband has sleep apnea and he is skinny as a rail! My sleep apnea doctor always says it has to do with three things. 1. Small chin 2. Short Neck 3. Overweight

I had to do 2 of them, because the first one I didn't actually sleep enough for them to fit me with a mask for the second half of the night. If you have any difficulties sleeping outside your home, I'd ask your PCP for a sleep aid for the study. Its extremely uncomfortable being hooked up to everything, and you have to sleep flat on your back for the study. This is because most apnea is the worst when you are on your back.

This is correct, but you will also visit a Respiratory Therapist, which mine is in the same office is where I get all my CPAP supplies from. My RT helped me more than the technician did at my sleep study. And remember, when you get setup to have your supplies, you can always exchange your mask during the "return" period. For example, I went through 6 different masks before I found one that I liked. My supply company was able to get me a new one, that was covered by insurance, within a 30 day return window. Don't suffer with a bad mask, when there are other options. I tried many styles and finally landed on one. My supply company also does mail delivery of supplies, so once a month I get a package with all of our stuff, its wonderful!

I was mailed a test kit and did it at home. I slept just over 4 hours thankfully because that was the time limit they needed. Slept as I normally do sitting upright on the sofa because of back issues.

Yes my,c pap supplier is wonderful, not going to ask the name if you don't want to say, but mine does the same thing. They also call me just before resupply time to make every thing is fine with me. I appreciate that personal touch. Makes me,felt llike I am a sombody, instead of just another customer in their file. . I am just finishing a mandatory 30 day electronic compliance record Ohio State requested before they finalize,my surgery date. And although,i wasn't the easiest thing making sure I had 4+ hours every 24 hours with Uncle Snuffly it wasn't impossible, got, used,to looking like a jet pilot every night. I used to,have vivid, scary nightmares, was I because of my apnea episodes? Hmm, could be!

I actually have adult night terrors due to PTSD and they have lessened substantially since I’ve used my CPAP. So it’s very possible that your dreams were due to the apnea’s.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
