Eating after gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

I had gastric bypass over a month ago and my surgery went great. No pain, no gas, no nausea no nothing but I have a little problem.. I get hungry. I know some people don’t get hungry, others feel a little hunger but I get hungry HUNGRY! I feel almost the same hunger pangs that I used to get before I had my surgery yet that doesn’t bother me too much because when I do eat I can only have a few bites before restriction takes over regardless of how hungry I feel. With that being said, my issue is how long it takes my stomach to send me the message that I’m full. So let me explain.. I get hungry, I eat, I feel the restriction, I stop. I’m still hungry but I can’t eat anymore. 15min later after I’ve finished eating is that my fullness comes in and it’s like a weed brownie but Instead of getting higher and higher I get fuller and fuller and fuller until I feel like I will burst. I hate when this happens and the only way to control it is if I stop eating while I still feel like I’m starving and walk away from my food and even then it’s not guaranteed. Does this happen to anyone else? It happens with any and everything broth, Soup mash, solids.

Are you on a Proton Pump Inhibitor (e.g. Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, Prevacid)? Excess acid sometimes presents as hunger. After bariatric surgery, our smaller stomachs still produce acid as if our stomachs were bigger; therefore, the majority of surgeons recommend PPIs for 3-6 months post-op.

Your nerves were cut during surgery, which means you may not feel much restriction initially. This will change later but until then it is imperative you do not try to eat to fullness; instead, measure your food (protein first) and only eat small portion sizes.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
