Struggling with Pre-Op diet!

Recommended Posts

I am seriously struggling with the pre-op diet.....I have no problem doing a liquid only diet, except that my doctor requires a certain "kit" and I am kind of a picky eater.....(go figure) so I didn't get the chance to see what flavors/ brands I would like best. But, the shakes are the worst!! Chalky, lumpy (from powder mix) and I have to add milk instead of Water, and I do not like milk (never been a milk drinker) It's a struggle for me to get even 2 down out of 5 I am supposed to have every day. I am not hungry, I can easily skip it with no problem......good news, surgery is next week. Bad news, I have 2 teenage sons who are always eating! LOL

Thanks for listening......

Congratulations on getting a surgery date. Some of the Protein Shakes are kind of on the gross side. I found Dymatize Protein Powder to be pretty good. It doesn't have a chat chalky flavor and isn't thick. It's 120 calories, 1 carb, 0 sugars per each 5-6 ounce serving. I got it in the classic chocolate flavor. It's thin when mixed with Water, I don't know about with milk though. Hope you find something that works soon.

I would explore Protein powders and premade drinks. They have clear ones Dymatize is personally my clear favorite. Priemer premade shakes are my milky favorite. As for powder I have yet to find one. Personally I think it’s just about the kickback they get for forcing participants to use certain ones when they require it. Sure I would try it if I didn’t like it I would get something of my choice and just make sure it meets their nutrition requirements

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
