Hair loss and an over the counter solution?

Recommended Posts

What is a good over the counter Vitamin for Hair loss? I didn't have much after surgery but it has increased and it is starting to freak me out. I know it's normal and I am eating as much Protein as I can in a day, but I want to do more.

Any help would be appreciated!

I've heard some docs recommend Nioxin shampoo/conditioner. ?? Pre-natal Vitamins were good for hair and nails when I took them. Unfortunately, this is to be expected, but just as quickly as you lose, you should see that there is new growth as well. My hairdresser always comments on how much new growth I have.

I also broke down and got myself a perm. A perm to my hair is like some sort of mega-Vitamin. This may not be the case with everyone, but it sure jumpstarts the growth in mine.

My husband bought some Neutrogena T/Gel (Therapeutic Shampoo). It's fairly cheap, available anywhere. It has 1% Coal Tar in it. The smell does not remain in your hair! He used it a few times and his hair looks thicker, shinier, and healthier. I know I've bought something similar from the vet for our dogs' coats (same smell).

Leatha Nioxin is a very good product. I'm a beautican and I have lots of clients who have had great results with it. I give you an A+ on that sugestion.

Same problem here, even more so!! My throid numbers are out of whack and can be a part of the problem too besides the Protein thing.....!

The coal tar thing makes sense! When I started taking the thyroid medicine 30 years ago, the doc prescribed this Shampoo and stuff to put on my hair at night that had coal tar in it. So you may be onto something there!

Thanks for the ideas!

I worried about hairloss post surgery, as I allready have alopecia, however my hair has grown in thicker, I am not sure why. I did speak with My doctor, and a dermatologist who explained that most Hair loss after baritric surgery can be linked to protien dificiency. There are lots of Vitamins, and protien drinks available. I prefer vitamist. I took the bottle to the dietician at the hospital and she said it is great. they also have a great protien drink that is boosted with Calcium. the web address is www.vitamist.com I have also used infinity product, and I noticed on the link for usa fills they sale infinity products. I have used several of the infinity vitamins and protien drinks, and they are great. You might also contact your surgeons office and see if they recommend a certian product. Sorry about my spellin I need hooked on phonics lol

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
