Any "safe" Chinese food after sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Haven't really had any craving in the months post sleeve and I'm making good progress.

Today I feel like an absolute bottomless pit and I just want Chinese. What would you order? Or, would you just tell yourself "No, I don't want that", and move on to something healthy?

I know the feeling!

Are you on to regular food?

Egg Drop and Hot & Sour Soup are tasty and should be low cal. Chinese food doesn't have to be disastrous to your calories for the day. It's really hard to tell though at your local independent Chinese food places though, but they have the best food. Of course chain Chinese is convenient because their nutritional info is available. For instance Panda Express Broccoli Beef is only 150 cals/serving & Mushroom chicken is only 170. I can only eat about 20% of the serving, so really not bad at all.

I get chicken and broccoli usually. According to mfp it is 240 a cup—-which I can’t finish anyway.

There are a few low carb recipes out on the web. I use one with sugar free orange marmalade to make orange chicken.

I prefer Thai instead. Keep the spice level mild, though...wowsers.

I'd order chicken Satay and a Thai Cucumber salad. (in fact, I have a couple times..lol) Have your peanut sauce served on the side as a dip for your chicken and use sparingly. Sauce is so good, but high in calories..so watch your portion control!

Thai Pad Ped is also a good choice. I like tofu or chicken Pad Ped.

I was craving Chinese over the weekend and I passed on it after looking at the menu. Everything I thought I might want, was breaded, fried, sauced in something sweet.... it was disappointing to say the least. Plus I don't tolerate spicy as well as I used to. I'd love to hear other's suggestions as well.

I get shrimp with Chinese vegetables, but no sauce and steamed. Then I add my own soy sauce and have a small amount of rice with it.

Very low calorie and good.

That's a bummer Ash!

So independent Chinese places are so hard to calculate calories/macros on. Sometimes I splurge and get my favorite, Ma Po Tofu (generally spicy, but you can order it mild). Sometimes I play it safe and get one of their Soups, or asparagus chicken, or green bean chicken. Those I can discern all the ingredients, I just won't know how much oil was used.

Chains are easier because they publish their nutritional info. I tend to eat PF Changs, Panda Express and Pick Up Stix pretty often, as they are in airports I frequent.

PF Changs, I get, Egg Drop Soup, Hot & Sour Soup, Steamed Shrimp Dumplings, Black Pepper Chicken, Ginger Chicken, Sea Bass. I also get their poke, and spicy tuna roll, but those aren't Chinese!

Panda, I get, their tofu items (if they have them), Green Bean Chicken, Black Pepper Chicken, and Steak and Shrimp. You can get the Entrees al a carte, which I never knew.

Pick Up Stix, I get, Vinaigrette salad with Chicken, Lettuce Wraps. You can order most of their chicken dishes "Steamed, white meat only", so that brings their calories down a lot, and let's me splurge on my favorite, House Special Chicken. But any of the chicken dishes that way are reasonable, and I think the Garlic Chicken is already prepared this way. All of their shrimp dishes are options, and are my fave after the HS Chicken.

We have a Panda, but that's it. I've gotten their beef and broccoli, come to think of it. I guess It just doesn't hit the "Chinese spot" for me.

Maybe try their Black Pepper chicken. It's probably my fave.

If you don’t mind Mediocre Chinese Panda Express has lots of low carb high Protein options. Go to their website and look at the info! If you want better food use those dishes as a guide or starting off point!

Lots of stir fry is pretty decent—low carb high protein with veggies! And most good places will adapt to your instructions!

I'm actually going to try something from there for lunch. Probably the green bean chicken.

I’ve had it a few times and normally just go with meat options and don’t get too fancy since I’m eating only a few ounces anyway. Boneless or regular spare ribs, chicken or beef skewers, any kind of steamed meat and veg all work great. I’ve tried chicken fingers, which are so so, and I can only eat 1 or 2 and don’t feel well after, same with any type of noodle.

I am 3 months post op and recently had steamed shrimp with mixed veggies. I measured four ounces on my food scale and drizzled a little Frank's Red Hot sauce. No rice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
