pandagirl 0 Posted November 5, 2007 This may be a silly question ,but are you guys getting colder easier? I started my Liquid Protein diet in September and have lost close to 45 pounds ( I am hoping that is good. Not sure how others rate against that.) And I have found that I am cold often, even in temps in the upper 70’s. I feel like a cold-blooded lizard scrounging for sun rays to heat up my body. I’ve heard that rapid weight-loss causes this and in the book ‘Passing for Thin”, the author mentions that she is always cold now and has seen this in many of her friends. So, are you getting cold-blooded like me or are you still warm and toasty? :kiss2:
make33 2 Posted November 5, 2007 Wow, this is a really neat question! Mainly because I have been FREEZING since I had surgery! I was having hot flashes right into September and now I sit at my desk and have a heater going underneath it! I figured it was because in Pennsylvania we've just begun to slide into fall/winter. But no-one else in the house (or at work) is exceptionally cold. I've been telling my husband that I am now out of the big "M" and over to the TB (Thin Blood) era!! It's NOT just you... Wendell Edwards 73 Posted November 6, 2007 I have heard two theories as to why people get colder after weight loss. One theory says that the human body realizes that the caloric intake has been cut. Hundreds of starvation periods helped us to adapt to times of decreased food by the body shutting down any non-essential functions, such as maintaining body temperature. When I went on Optifast I did NOT experience this feeling of cold, but when I did HMR I did feel very cold. Both Optifast and HMR are medically supervised diets with very low calorie shakes substituted for food.< /p> After getting a Lap-Band and losing weight, I am much colder than any time previously. The other theory that I heard about is that morbidly obese people adapt to their heavier weight by growing larger blood vessels close to the skin. Blood circulating through those vessels cause the body to lose heat, and when a person loses weight, their cooling system takes a while to shrink, which causes the person to feel cold all the time. argon 3 Posted November 6, 2007 I'm definitely ALWAYS cold now.... everyone always comments on what a difference they notice in me, in THAT sense especially. I always used to be hot, summer AND winter. I was a sweaty mess, all year round! Now... I'm always freezing! I'm considering long johns for the first time! I think that is as good a theory as any! When I went to see my surgeon Friday, I was sitting in the office literally wrapped in my jacket and he told me that I would be colder from a decrease in my "insulation." All I know is that I am down 26 pounds and walking around my house in sweats while my 7 months pregnant daughter is up 24 pounds and wearing shorts!
kacee 3 Posted November 6, 2007 As far as I am concerned....cold? BRING IT ON BABY! I'm so darned tired of being hot everywhere I go....even in the dead of winter I only sleep with a thin sheet on me. I'd rather be piling some clothes on than continuing to crank down my A/C!!! Actually I haven't noticed getting colder though I am down about 50 pounds now. RATS!
lovekatz1975 1 Posted November 6, 2007 I notice that I've been cold too. Especially my hands.
Dibaby 0 Posted November 6, 2007 I'm alwayys cold now..alwayysss...expecially my hands too. I'm going to invest in a electric blanket for work. I'm miserable. I also bought those "hot hands" things at walgreens for a buck..they are toasty
Wheetsin 714 Posted November 6, 2007 I started noticing this right around 1 yr post-op. I chatted up my friends with the band, RnY, DS, etc. and every single one of them had the same experience - constantly freezing.
jennibee 3 Posted November 7, 2007 My hands are always like ice! I have noticed that ever since my surgery (9-13-07) that I am nearly always cold. I used to sleep with a very thin blanket at night. For the past two nights I have piled on three or four blankets just to stop my shivering. I live in Pa. and the temps have been pretty low the past few days but geez. I am glad to know that I'm not the only popsicle out here...lol!
munchkin392 1 Posted November 7, 2007 I'm glad to know I'm not crazy! I almost posted a thread the other day asking this very same question! Usually I'm dying from being hot, especially at work and when I sleep. Lately, I can't get enough blankets on when I sleep. Now tell me if this is wierd- I have noticed since I started the pre-op diet that my teeth have become EXTREMELY sensitive also, and I have never had this problem before. Anyone else with sensitive teeth in addition to freezing?
lr2158 0 Posted November 7, 2007 I personally stay hot I wish I was cold. I have trouble sleeping at night I wake up sweating and this started after I was banded.
Candle 11 Posted November 7, 2007 Definitely. It just started getting really chilly here in NY and my boyfriend yelled at me last night for turning up the heat so much lately. (Oil prices are insane right now!)
jennibee 3 Posted November 8, 2007 munchkin I have been having trouble with my teeth since being banded also. They seem to "hurt" almost. I was worried that I am maybe missing something in my diet that I need for them. But then I thought about it and it seemed silly. Not drinking soda and avoiding sweets is good for my teeth so I am stumped as to why they are so sensitive. My gums also seem to be swollen a little too. I have a dentist appt. on Tuesday and plan to bring this up to him. Perhaps he can suggest something. For now I have just been using toothpaste for sensitive teeth and trying to avoid foods/drinks that bother me.
Jachut 487 Posted November 8, 2007 Eeek, hope its not scurvey! Not seriously, you'd be unlikely to get scurvey in this day and age but ARE you eating enough vegetables and fruit? I'm always bloody freezing, its driving me nuts. Everyone is walking round in tank tops and shorts today as its 22 degrees celcius in Melbourne, not that I've ever called that hot enough to wear so few clothes, but I'm quite comfy and was cold this morning in jeans and a 3/4 sleeve T. For the first time in my life I find myself wearing things like vests, camisoles and Tshirts under clothes, I've always been a one layer person. I've never worn anything to bed in my entire life, many nights now I go to bed wrapped in my bathrobe (dont own any pyjamas) and I'm actually considering buying an Electric blanket - but Doug would boil to death.
