Scheduled for surgery Nov. 27 but am now feeling so confused!!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone..

I've been trying to do as much reading as possible about the surgery. I went to the DR for my first appointment and didn't get too much information and didn't really know what to ask..

Here are a few of my questions.

1. Will I have a problem getting/being pregnant with the band?

2. Does the band stay in place forever? Will it need fills forever?

3. Once the band is in place, is it dangerous for me to be EXTREMELY active?? Dancing, moving around, heavy exercising, etc?

4. Can you FEEL the band once it's placed?

5. Is there anything that CAN NOT be tolerated by your stomach after the band is in place?

Sorry for so many Q's...I'm confused!!!

Hey everyone..

I've been trying to do as much reading as possible about the surgery. I went to the DR for my first appointment and didn't get too much information and didn't really know what to ask..

Here are a few of my questions.

1. Will I have a problem getting/being pregnant with the band?

Nope! Losing weight will make it easier to have a baby, and having the band ensures you can still get all the healthy nutrients you need.

2. Does the band stay in place forever? Will it need fills forever?

The idea is for it to stay there forever. Generally once you get to goal you shouldn't probably need adjustments unless you feel like you're slipping, or some people get just a little of the Fluid removed after they get to goal.

3. Once the band is in place, is it dangerous for me to be EXTREMELY active?? Dancing, moving around, heavy exercising, etc?

You're supposed to give yourself some time for healing (your doctor will tell you how much). I've heard of ports flipping from heavy activity, but that is easy to fix. It's been said that you can slip your band if you even cough too hard, but you should ask your doctor about this specifically.

4. Can you FEEL the band once it's placed?

The only thing I can feel is it's restricting how much I eat. If I'm not eating, I don't feel anything but my port. (Many people don't even feel that, my port just likes to remind me that it's there).

5. Is there anything that CAN NOT be tolerated by your stomach after the band is in place?

This depends on the person. Some people can't eat rice, bread, eggs and more, some people are effected by only one or 2 things, and some people can eat anything.

My wife and I had the oBand Surgery 9 months ago. My wife has lost about 65 lbs, and I’ve lost about 85 lbs. It has been one of the best things that we’ve ever done to improve our quality of life. We have been very happy with our decision to have the oBand Surgery. We would definitely do it again. I was so happy that 3 months after surgery that I quit my job to come here as a Patient Coordinator to help people like you.

I have patients that have the Lap Band and get pregnant all the time. When they get pregnant they just have the band opened all the way up. If you have any questions, please send me a private message.

Thank you all soooo much for your responses!!!!!!!!!!!

You definitely answered my questions and are giving me encouragement.

A lot of posts I'm reading are negative and problems with the band and it's making me skeptical...but I just need to stay focused.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
