When did hunger strike for you?

Recommended Posts

I am 5 weeks out now and so far, have had little if any hunger. However, I don't know if the last couple of days, my mind is trying to play tricks on me or if I am genuinely starting to get the hunger feeling back.

I am feeling ever so slightly empty at the moment but I can't tell if its hunger or just my old, greedy mind saying you can eat something lol.

How far were you before genuine hunger came back?

For me, at about 3 months I had physical hunger return. But after two weeks or so, it disappeared again. But head hunger has been a constant struggle for me. It is definitely as real and as persistent as physical hunger!

The day after surgery, with a vengeance.

I was starving...crazy hungry...until around three weeks when I started eating about 1000 calories per day.

I eat about 1200 per day now, and have no problems with hunger at all.

I can’t answer that. It hasn’t happened yet.

Real hunger where you want to gnaw your arm off?

I don't have it much at 7 months. I can tell I need to eat because my brain starts to malfunction and I get tired, cranky.

I do have head hunger and it varies, sometimes it is a couple days in a row, and then nothing for weeks.

An empty stomach does not bother me, I just notice it but it doesn't really set off alarms. I will get a cheese stick or eat 2 small shrimp or something like that and be okay until meal time. Or get busy and forget to eat until I am in trouble and desperate for nourishment. All part of the navigation.

I wasn't hungry at all for about four months. Now if I forget to make my Protein Shakes I get really really hungry. However, it still only takes a relatively small serving to satisfy this hunger.

I have felt my hunger kick in more in the last two months, I'm 5 months post op tomorrow. It's not nearly as bad as pre op. And sometimes, I still think it's head hunger. The good thing is, that if I can't overcome it, I have a small snack and I'm good again in no time.

Nine weeks out, I've felt hunger since day one. No, it's NOT head hunger like everyone tells me, I am legitimately hungry, but definitely not like before my surgery. I try to keep hydrated and keep my Protein up but it's really a struggle and VERY annoying when your doctors say it will go away (umm it hasn't) and (some) bariatric group members say it's not true hunger. I'm disappointed, I heard a lot of even most of the members of my post op support groups here locally say they don't feel hungry or rarely do, some of them are years out. But, I don't give in, I drink my Water, stick to my 3 meals and maybe have one protein rich snack. I guess it is what it is.

I was hungry the day after my surgery and HUNGRY every day since! I envy you  I was so looking forward to this non existent hunger that I heard about and was told would go away with a smaller stomach but I am in the percentile that that did not happen. So count yourself blessed

I was also started feeling hunger the day after my surgery. My doctor told me it was just stomach acid but I've pretty much experienced it every day since surgery. And I know it's not "head hunger" because I don't even want to eat if that makes sense. My stomach wants food but my mind tells me I'm too nauseous and uncomfortable to eat.

The hunger is real! But is it head hunger or real hunger? I am still working it out.

Water helps. I am jealous of the people who don't feel hunger, it's a b**ch. But I didn't have my belly cut up for nothing. Some days it is just me and my Iron will.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
