Pain when swallowing

Recommended Posts

Had my gastric bypass surgery on May 15, 2018. Soon as I woke swallowing when I drink was painful. The nurses assured me that it came from tube that was placed in my throat for breathing purposes. I was in the hospital for 2 days and released with the painful swallowing STILL going on TODAY!

No matter WHAT I drink or try to eat it hurts to swallow. Has anyone else had this problem?

A month later... you might want to talk to your PCP or Surgical team... that's not normal.

I talked to the GI nurse that works with the surgeon who did my surgery and she has set up an upper GI with the light to see what's going on. Thank you for answering back so quickly.

Had an endoscopic surgery done with the light. Found have 2 ulcers! One surrounding the staples where the pouch and intestinal tract join and the other ulcers is deeper within the pouch. The surgeon prescribed Prilosec to take 2 times a day for 3 months, then, MY surgeon who preformed my RNY Surgery prescribed Carafe tablets to dissolve in Water every 4 hours also. So far so good. Able to eat AND drink now!!

Glad you finally have a diagnosis! Hope you heal and feel better soon!

Did your surgeon prescribe a PPI (e.g. Prilosec, Protonix, Prevacid, Nexium) for post-op? Most do to prevent issues right after WLS. Our stomachs are used to creating acid for a normal/large-sized stomach so when they’re made smaller, excess acid is produced for a while until the body starts to make less for the new smaller stomach. So taking PPIs for the first 3-6 or 6-12 months is usually recommended.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
