Feeling Awkward & Embarrassed About Visible Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

Yes, it feels weird to become a 'project' and human nature just seems to take over. It will die down, but probably not soon enough to give you any relief. You can try deflecting - 'hey I love talking about this but I need to take my walk now, take my Vitamins, go write down meals in my food journal, and then walk away.' If you are trapped and can't leave, just ask them something personal - so how was your pap smear tuesday? Soon they will find something else to talk about.

And take all the compliments with a smile and a thank you and move on because that will end at some point.

This is a hard one for me to understand! I wish people would notice that I’ve lost weight. I feel so much better about myself, but wondering if any improvements are even noticeable. On the other hand, it is hard to care since I truly feel so much better!

I refused to tell anyone about my surgery except my husband and mother prior to surgery and one couple after surgery who were restaurant and eating buddies since we didn’t want them to feel like they were being ignored. I asked that they honor my need for privacy which they have.

When people notice or comment about eating less, I tell them that I was told I was pre-diabetic and decided to change my life. It is the truth. It is honestly none of their business what tools or strategies are used.

My advice is to error on the side of caution when telling others about your surgery. One day, I may be willing to be more open if my story can help another person who suffers with weight, but for now, it is my own journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
