Some questions regarding GERD...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! In terms of people acquiring GERD after surgery, I would appreciate all honesty in your answers, it would help me immensely....

First of all

1) Did you suffer from GERD before surgery?

2) If you do now, how often a week? And how would you rate it from 1-10 (10 being the worst)

3) What do you do to treat it, and does it help alleviate the symptoms completely?

4) How far out are you from post-op?

Thank you so much everyone! :)

1) Did you suffer from GERD before surgery? I had very mild gastritis and a small hiatal hernia (repaired during sleeve) which cause mild heartburn from time to time--maybe twice a month.

2) If you do now, how often a week? And how would you rate it from 1-10 (10 being the worst) Yes, everyday, 4-7 depending on the day.

3) What do you do to treat it, and does it help alleviate the symptoms completely? pantoprazole 20 mg twice a day. 40 mg of Omeprazole at bed time. No, my symptoms are never fully gone.

4) How far out are you from post-op? 7 weeks.

I had Gerd, and took meds daily and slept elevated. During surgery, they found a type Ii hernia and fixed it.

Now, I take pepcid (otc normal dose) daily, and have occasional heartburn. Sometimes after eating, for which I use tums. It's much better now than before.

I'm 10 months out from my sleeve surgery. No regrets!

I'm only 3 months out. I've been taking Prevacid for years now for GERD. So far, it hasn't gotten any worse with the surgery. I only take one 15mg pill in the morning and I'm good for the day.

1) Did you suffer from GERD before surgery?

I had GERD off and on before being sleeved. When I had a flare up, it could be bad, but fortunately it was rare. As I investigated, inquired, and prepared for surgery, my doctors agreed that my GERD was "situational". Meaning, that it flared when I was stressed, when I ate a large (usually unhealthy) meal or when I ate the wrong type of foods. Eating lots of of bread or carbs usually gave me heartburn. Fried foods also gave me heartburn and I would wake in the night with indigestion. Thankfully, the doctors felt that I would be at a very small risk of having this issue post op, especially since I wouldn't be eating a lot of carbs or fried food.< /em>

2) If you do now, how often a week? And how would you rate it from 1-10 (10 being the worst)

I get mild heartburn maybe 3 or 4 days a week. If I had to rate it, in comparison with what I had before (described above), I would rate it a 1. It's mildly annoying.

3) What do you do to treat it, and does it help alleviate the symptoms completely?

I take Nexium every evening on an empty stomach. It is very effective and I only occasionally have break-through heartburn 3-4 days a week. It's always in the late afternoon when I'm commuting home, probably when the medication is starting to wear off a little. It goes away if I suck on a peppermint.

4) How far out are you from post-op?

I am on the plus side of 2 months (surgery date 4/10/18)

I'm 7 1/2 years post-surgery. I did not have GERD before surgery. Mine developed about a year post-op. I keep a glass of Water on the nightstand and 2-3 nights a week wake up with a little burning that some water takes away. I'd rate it a 1-2. I take 40mg of omeprazole a day and sometimes have to take a Zantac (maybe once every couple of months) if I have breakthrough acid. Honestly, if the choice were to be fat without GERD or thin with GERD, I would take the GERD every time. My surgeon warned me there was a possibility of developing it after surgery so I was not surprised.

In one study i read recently that compared sleeve to bypass there were 11 people with post op (sleeve) issues and 9 of 11 were gerd issues. this is the number 1 issue for sleeve as this procedure seems to make it worse.

most people with serious gerd issues get moved to bypass by there surgeons because that procedure shows no increased gerd issues like the sleeve does

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
