December Surgery Dates

Shoegirlia - good luck with your surgery! My doctor didn't formally restrict my food prior to surgery. He wanted me to eat healthy to make sure my liver did not expand. I am on liquid post-op for three weeks.

Hi all!

I just got home from being banded yesterday. Other than a little pain....all is going good. I'd lost 4 lbs when I went to surgery already. Woo Hoo!!! How is everyone else fairing?

I got banded Thursday, and I am starting to get sick of the pain. I wish it was gone already so I could just get back to normal. The 6 week liquid/mushy diet is already starting to get boring, too! At least I love mashed potatoes. I have lost 28 pounds since the first appointment....yey! I'm almost in the 230's and haven't even had time to enjoy getting down to the 240s! AWESOME! :clap2: Pretty soon I won't even meet insurance qualifications for the surgery...

I guess I am lucky. The gas pain was the worst for me. I wish I had a different scale to weigh on. the ones I have are not too good. I know I'm VERY hungry, and really need my first fill so I don't overdo it.

I've found that 1/2 cup portions are NOT enough to keep me from feeling like I'm starving!

I was banded on December 14, 2007 - Friday and I am back to work... I was very ouchie the 3 days post op but once I stopped taking the pain medication I started to feel better. I didn't feel as dizzy or light headed. One Alieve gel cap kept my pain at bay. It is day 5 post op and I cannot wear a regular bra- which suck.... a sports bra does not quite support the twins... hahhaaaa... sorry, but it is true! I am living off Tomato Soup, drinkable yogurt, pudding cups and haven't ventured out into the world of mashed potatoes or pintos and cheese yet... any recommendations? I stupidly tried tuna fish yesterday morning - i do not know what came over me but i did... dumb! my stomach was saying "no no no" like amy winehouse after the first small bite... i could have done some major damage.... can someonce slap me?

I'm officially a bandster, now.

My surgery was yesterday. I did a 2-week pre-op Medifast and lost 13 pounds. They asked me to have a light dinner by 8pm Monday, and no fluids after midnight Monday. I arrived for surgery at the out patient center at 11am, where they set me up with support stockings, a saline drip, and a cushy recliner to rest in. They were running late, so my husband and I visited and read for a while.

At 12:30 they added antibiotics and anti-nausea meds to the saline, and I walked into the operating room 15 minutes later. Dr Neal came out to tell my husband it all went well at 2:15, so surgery took less than 90 minutes.

I woke up in the recovery room, got more pain meds, and pretty soon I was walking to the restroom. My husband met me there and helped me dress (I wore a sweatshirt dress and didn't bother with underwear or bra - just put my coat on over it). We were driving home at 4pm, so it all went very quickly!

I sat on the couch and dozed for the rest of the day, taking my pain meds on schedule. I slept well, but woke up every four hours to pee, always about 15 minutes *before* I was due for pain meds - after struggling the first time I took the meds before trying to get up the next two times - much better!

I'm taking it pretty easy today, but I've been up getting Soups and Protein shakes and Water - I also made some sugar-free Jello jigglers that are firming up in the fridge.

I'm pretty comfortable sitting - lying down isn't as comfy and getting up from lying down is really hard. I can't bend over very far. But I only really hurt when I'm getting up or down.

I'm not sure which of my five super-glued incisions is my port - maybe the one under my xyphoid? My post-op appointment isn't until Jan 3rd because of the holidays so I guess I'll find out then - I'm curious to know which size AP band I got, too.

Hope surgery goes as smoothly for the remaining bandsters-to-be!

Hello everyone!!

I got my band on Monday the 17th. Everything went really smooth. The surgery was scheduled at 9:00 but they didn't actually take me in until 10:00. My daughters said it took exactly 45 minutes! I was wide awake before I even left the recovery room, was back in my room for about 15 minutes and the nurse said that as soon as I could pee, I was ready to go home! Had no problem with that either! So I was on my way home by 1:30. First day wasn't bad, I slept quite a bit. 2nd day I was in quite a bit of pain and the pain meds they gave me made me feel really weak and sick to my stomach. Got up yesterday morning and decided to stay off the pain meds, just took extra strength tylenol. This morning I have very little pain, no nausea. Haven't had any appetite yet, trying to eat (drink) a little just to keep up my strength. Thanks for all your prayers - I'll be doing the same for all of you!

God Bless

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
