HELP!

I'm on day 7 of my 2 week liquid diet and I totally blew it today. I ate a huge lunch - just got started and couldn't stop. I'm allowed 1 small meal each day for the first 7 days but this was by no means a small meal. Will they stop my surgery because I didn't follow instructions? I've done real good all week, but now I'm really dreading next week of the full liquid diet, cause I am STARVING!!

Anyone able to help me out?

HELP!

I cannot give you medical advise because I do not work in the medical profession -- however, I can pass along what my doctor told me.

#1, if your doctor opens you up on surgery day and finds food in your stomach, he will not do the surgery.

#2, one of the main purposes of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver. The smaller your liver is, the easier the surgery is to perform. If your liver does not shrink then they cannot do the surgery laproscopically. Instead, you will awaken with a "full open" cut -- that is, if the doctor does it at all.

#3, another main purpose of the pre-op diet is to prove that you can in fact do this diet. If you start eating and can't stop after the surgery, you will at least find yourself in considerable pain, and may possibly hurt yourself in the process. Remember, you don't go back to eating steak the day after surgery. Depending on your personal plan, chances are you'll be on a combination of liquids and soft foods for 4-6 weeks.

If I were in your shoes, I would contact my doctor's office and tell them the truth. You don't want to get split open only to find out they won't/can't do the surgery. Chances are your doctor will be able to work with you. Maybe it's no big deal, maybe they move you back a week, whatever. But now is the time to grow up and take charge of yourself. This is just the beginning.

I became overweight because I didn't tell myself NO! Now, I'm ready to be in control and tell myself NO!!

I've heard that we go through the stages of grief when we decide to have this surgery

1. We deny we have a problem.

2. We are angry at ourselves for being like this..

3. We bargain.. well.. I can have just one cheeseburger.. it won't hurt..

4. Depression.. because we ate that cheeseburger

5. Acceptance.. we accept that we have gotton ourselves into this mess..(I think this is the next stage for you...) and it's time to "suck it up" and do what is right.

It's not easy.. and I will be on my pre-op diet over the Christmas holiday. I'm going to dress up, make all the yummy goodies and have a wonderfully festive time with my family.

I'm going to watch them enjoy themselves, laugh and watch the Grandbabies giggle and laugh as we play with their new toys.

It's time you said NO! Face up to the decision you made. For Gosh Golly Sakes... YOU wanted this change.

The first thing i would say is settle down it is not the end of the world. You are not the first person to slip off your diet. But now get back on that horse. Follow the diet the rest of the time. If you stick to the diet from here on in and then are without food and liquids for the proper time before surgery you will be fine for the surgery. As far as telling your Dr. fine if you want to. but remember at this point it is what you eeat in a week. Going off this time only will not kill you. My dr. has me on two meals a day with Liquid Protein one day. no liquid diet at this point. Your stomach will be empty if you follow the no foods or liquids the day before like you are supposed to.

So pat yourself on the back for the choice you have made to improve your health and think positively about what you will be able to do next year. Come on get back on that horse.

As a nurse I do not see how your Dr. can find food in your stomach if you are without food and liquids the 12 hours before surgery. Unless you really have been cheating a lot. Your digestive track has peristalsis and moves the food along at a normal pace unless you have some physical problem other than obesity. I could be wrong, but I have never heard of food in the stomach if you follow the orders 24 hours before. This comment however does not give anyone permission to overeat in the preparation for surgery. Am I just confusing people more??

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
