Protein drink cramping my stomach

Recommended Posts

:sick I havent gotten my date for surgery yet, hoping for November or December. I thought I'd try the Protein Drinks and get used to them. I bought the 100% whey Protein Drink from GNC berry mix. It taste good but after drinking it, i guess 20 min later my stomach started cramping and i felt kind of sick. Is this normal?

Hoping to get insurance approval soon. This weight is driving me nuts.

Thanks Felicia

The only time I've been lactose intolerant was when I drank a whey Protein shake. However, usually if I take Lactaid when I drink it, I'm okay. I didn't have any trouble with powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury before my surgery but I got very bloated yesterday, one day after surgery, even though I took some chewable Lactaid. So I switched to low-carb SlimFast and the bloating went away. Now, that may have just been related to surgery so I'm going to try the Unjury again tomorrow.

Anyway, even if you've never been lactose intolerant before, the whey Protein may trigger it. I agree with the suggestion to try soy protein. I'm going to do that next if I find out that the whey really is the problem.

Thanks for the advice. I thought it might be the whey. I have never been able to drink whole milk. I can barely digest 2%. cheese and yogurt don't bother be, nor ice cream, just milk. I'm headed to the store to get the soy. Thanks a bunch and I hope you feel better too Longhorn.

Thanks all

F

I found a great tasting Protein shake at Sam's club ~ it's made by EAS (Energy Athletics Systems) and it's called AdvantEDGE Carb Control. It is sugar free, only has 4 carbs, and has 17 grams of Protein. It doesn't taste bad either. Of course, Sam's sells the 24 count case, but I have seen it at Walmart in the pharmacy area by the other drinks in a small 4 pack. I haven't had any problems with it. It's worth a try.

Thanks Patty--I'm a big proponent of whey Protein isolate shakes, which are totally lactose free (chocolate malt and belgian chocolate are my favorites). And I do find that mixing it with Water actually tastes better than with skim milk!

Think what you got, Felicia, was whey Protein concentrate--which requires a blender and is not as pure. I've been buying my isolate at Amazon.com because that way I'm sure I'm getting the isolate and also (best of all)--free shipping!!

Glad you're doing well, Patty--and good luck Felicia... :(

BTW, I also use a "chicken broth" whey Protein isolate which really tastes like chicken broth (20 gram per scoop) and an unflavored isolate for adding to instant s/f pudding and jello--and anything else you want to put it in!

Both are sold at unjury.com--which was recommended to me by a doctor.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
