What are your favorite, but hated Stereotypes...

Recommended Posts

My most hated one is that because I am 43, not married, never been married and never gonna be married, and I have a very "tom-boy" look, I must be a lesbian.

Mmm, I get that one because I'm not remotely interested in dating, having kids, ever getting married, etc. Plus, I don't wear make-up, dress girly, or bother to flirt. My mom's even gone to the trouble of hinting that she'd be happy for me, no matter who I was attracted to. That conversation was almost painful. I just wanted to stick my fingers in my ears and hum. Apparently, if I don't talk about my conquests or how attractive I find a particular man to be, I must be a lesbian.

I've never heard the one about ALL fat girls have pretty faces, wow I saw some ugly ones at the club Sunday night. BTW, I think Rosie is an attractive woman face and all...

However, I've heard the one "You have such a pretty face, if you lost some weight you'd be beautiful... Darn it I am beautiful, however, I might be fat, but you are ugly-I can diet what the hell can you do!!

LOL!!!!!!!! I know it!!!!!!!!!

This girl that I work with told me once that all fat girls have pretty faces... I wanted to slap her...but I didn't.... I only said...."I don't think so" ugh!

I hate that a lot of people think that just because someone is skinny, automatically you are beautiful, I've seen some not so attractive skinny people...

I used to find Rosie pretty years ago, now she seems so mad all the time that in my eyes it wipes the beauty away... it's like she seems bitter and pissed off... but she is definitely not ugly...

Girls with pretty faces get away with having fat asses. If you are ugly, you are just ugly, so maybe a slender body earns you brownie points.

Before I retired I used to work with men, lots of men, building aircraft. They did pay a lot of attention to girls with great bodies even when the faces were not so hot. But they were not the ones that they married. :)

Most of mine have to do with my home state, West Virginia. We are not all, as one state education official recently told some school board members in one of our more backward areas, "four-wheel riding, dope smoking, alcoholic rednecks" who had no interest in education.

Hello ... I have a master's degree and my husband (who is not my cousin!) has a bachelor's. We both have professional jobs and make good money by local standards. I've never lived "up a holler" or on top of a mountain; in fact I've spent most of my life in metropolitan areas with populations of more than 100,000. I've never even been on a four-wheeler, although my older son has. I do drink occasionally but haven't smoked dope since college. I will cop to one WV stereotype - we are one of the fattest states in the Union and I do fit that description but hey, one can't win them all!

Hahahaha! In college I broke up with a semi-longterm bf, and decided men suck, no more bfs for me. I had a strict friends only rule. Coincidentally, I picked up a friend who was very butch in appearance. I have no idea if she was a lesbian or not, it never came up. I had her over once when my parents were visiting, and found out after the fact that they had "wondered" about our relationship since I hadn't dated any guys since the breakup, and never was a terribly girly girl (hair & makeup, ok, but don't get me near anything pink, frilly, or floral... etc.).

Whatever, I love my parents but they're freaks sometimes. It's funny how things don't matter, until they are a reality. I was always taught that color didn't matter, love is blind, etc. -- but you should have seen my family's reaction when I was going to prom with a black guy. Oh, no no no, "don't get us wrong" -- it doesn't matter, it's just that...

LOL! I think you just described my hometown lol!!!! And im not kidding, SURE there are us that want better in life, but the majority of people here are exactly that! LOL! I lived in a city and was a four-wheel riding, dope-smoking (NOT ANYMORE, THOSE WERE MY CRAZY DAYS), and an alcoholic....BUT IVe NEVER EVER been a redneck! lol

I get in trouble for this all the time:

I will admit that Im a little afraid of black guys (i do have a few that I am friends with, but ones that I dont know scare me). This is because all throughout school (i went to a 50/50 school) I was either made-fun of or touched constantly by black men. The assistant prinicipals and principals never did anything about it! I had one my Sophomore year tell me (and my boyfriend) that he was going to come to my house and kill my parents and rape me, and he wasnt kidding...He tried to touch me during class one day (ran his hand up my leg and up to my crotch). NO ONE would believe me because I was the overweight white-girl!! They thought I wanted attention....Ive had other occassions (since 3rd grade) where black guys were sexually harassing me, so Im just really on-guard around them...Does that mean I treat black male strangers badly, no, actually Im quite friendly, BUT I dont want them touching me or coming any more near me than needed.

So now Im pinned for being racist (being from Jasper, Texas doesnt help either). That doesnt make me a racist...Its all psychological, I was scarred by multiple black guys growing up! I used to have nightmares about it! I just wish people wouldnt judge so harshly..

Oh heres another one I just thought of. According to people that Ive chosen to disclose information to because it was important to our relationship, just because I was raped and didnt report it (because I was scared of possible gang activity), then I must have just been drunk and stupid, so I want people to feel sorry for me for being a whore...yeah that one pisses me off

Someone pegged me brilliantly the other day.

I was in a tute at uni. We were put together to work on a group assignment. She said something about her car breaking down and I remarked I was glad to have left those days behind, driving round in a 20 year old car. She said to me, I bet you drive a Ford Territory dont you?

Lol, she had me down to a T. The 3 kids, the family truckster etc. I hadnt thought it was that obvious. I was mock offended and she said you just have that look about you.

Stereotypes can be very annoying but we do often fit multiple ones.

I don't look like a lesbian

I don't think I look like one either. Of course that would be difficult, what with my Y chromosome and all. :biggrin1:

Seriously though, I do get the "You don't act Gay." That one kills me. People think I should be able to arrange flowers, decorate everyone's house and put women's hair up fabulous updos. Sorry, I can't do any of those. My DH is even more frustrating to folks who stereotype. He drives a big butch pickup truck (and can actually work on it to boot!), keeps up with every sport imaginable (particularly football) and yet can bake the best pies and cheesecakes you've ever put in your mouth. Boy, I'm glad being Gay doesn't define us...

Glad to see that I am not the only one who has gotten the 'are you gay?' questions/hints from parents and freinds. Got that alot in the past also becuase I have standards and I stick to them.

I am not interested right now in having a girlfriend, I am focusing on the 'new me' far to much to spend the time and energy in getting a girl and then maintaining the relationship.

LOL I have a lot of gay friends of both sexes who break those stereotypes but my best friend is a man who is a total pig. I have hosted nature walks in this cat's apartment! He is a great cook. You just don't want to look too closely at the plates and the cutlery is all.

Oh, I was just thinking about this. When my ninemsn page opened when I turned on the computer, there's an article about Fabio and George Clooney battling it out as heart throbs. I thought I'd pick George any day, he looks sophisticated, urbane, stylish, and attractively mature, whereas Fabio looks like a big dumb f..k. Especially because he speaks broken, halting accented English, which of course means he's an imbecile, right?

Then I thought HOW unfair is that? I dont even know him. That's probably how half the blonde, attractive women out there are treated too. Everyone assumes they're dumb.

That would drive anyone nuts, if they were of average or above average intelligence. I dont think having the body or the looks scores you so many brownie points - sometimes its an advantage but many times its not.

Its not only fat people or ugly people who get stereotyped and its not only beautiful people who fit all our constructions of normal who do the stereotyping either. We all do it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
