Something weird started happening ....

Recommended Posts

If I drink Water too quickly, I start feeling a really warm sensation ... like I need to turn on the air conditioning. I feel really hot. Is this something that should be concerning? Also, I can no longer tolerate the fake sugar in beverages - they're causing me to run to the bathroom. I am just drinking water and the occasional Decaf coffee or decaf unsweetened ice tea. Jeez, this whole process continues to be an evolution and learning rolled into one. I'll be 3 months post-op on Tuesday.

Never happened to me... although fake sugar is starting to gross me out. I was just thinking today that after this surgery my body feels a little unpredictable. I never know how my body is going to react to something. I hope whatever you're going through passes quickly!

I think the fake sugar thing is more of a sweetness issue. You dont do sweet now and things that are sweet are REAL sweet to you and that is not as pleasant to you as it was before. Your taste buds are more sensitive to sweet now that you are not eating it as a normal daily thing.

I never could stand the aftertaste of any fake sugar before and its no better now.

also, which fake sugars are sending you to the toilet? Sugar alcohols can have a laxative effect (bad for anyone having more than a few diet lollies or chewing gum), so you may be becoming more sensitive to those. I think I read somewhere that people suffering with irritable bowel couldn't tolerate sugar alcohols.

Aspartame always caused headaches for me, and 10-15 years ago was about the only sweetener used in diet anything. Most Protein powders and drinks still seem to be sweetened with aspartame.

I am more sensitive to the taste of sweet things already as have avoided more sweet things since starting sleeve planning in February. I've adapted to using some powdered stevia+xylitol sweetener in my coffee and iced fruit tea with my protein Water. I seem to tolerate splenda sweetened stuff so far too.

Could the sweet TASTE be triggering a form of dumping for you? Or dairy or other ingredients in the artificially sweetened stuff? It's crazy how things can suddenly change 3 months out!

My husband got the runs last week from drinking a small amount of aspartame-sweetened diet schweppes lemonade and never usually has any artificially sweetened stuff. He has the runs again today.. guess what he went and drank again last night even after knowing it likely caused the runs last week? I made him tip the rest out today lol. I'm making him protein water to take to work now, with bodie'z unflavored protein water powder, a brewed non-caffeinated fruit tea (his favorite is ginger and lemon) sweetened with sugar or honey and chilled before mixing.

If you are adapting to prefer things not being sweet at all that could be a really good thing for long term maintenance at least? :)

@Mattymatt I can't speak to the hot flashes when drinking too quickly, might be expansion causing some pressure on a nerve or something.

For the "Fake sugar" might be your new "norm". I know for me it's added sugars that get me and HFCS. I have to watch this stuff super close, but natural sugars don't do a damn thing. I can get so many strawberries and not have a single issue... I found that if I eat certain things to quickly it'll cause dumping as well, even if the sugar count is lower than 5 grams. It's crazy how much changes. Personally, it's helping me eat much better.

Have you discussed the Water issue with your PCP or Surgical Team?

Being flushed/hot is a symptom of dumping syndrome. Drink slower and it should go away. I get flushed/hot if I eat or drink too fast or eat the wrong things.

A Dr. posted here that Water will not cause dumping syndrome. The symptom might be the same, but the cause seems to be something different.

Fake sugar gags me a bit now. I do better with liquid stevia (natural brand I buy) added to my tea. But aspartame and other diet flavored stuff is gross and way too sweet.

Spoke with the medical pros and they're not alarmed. So long as I am getting my fluids in and there are no issues getting them out, it's just something that may or may not pass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
