pcos/meds/etc post op?

Recommended Posts

hello!

i was wondering what everyone’s experience was with pcos after surgery?

i met with my surgeon last month, and in preparation for surgery she told me to stop my birth control (which is what keeps my PCOS is line) and that’s fine but i’m a little nervous about it. i haven’t been sexually active in a few years, so not nervous in that aspect but more so for my period and how it’s going to affect that. i also know that some people gain weight when they start birth control so i’m worried that when they have me start it again post op that might happen? not sure if anyone has gone through this and could share their experience with me?

also, the other medications i’m on are fluoxetine (anxiety), topimax (binge eating), phentermine (appetite), metformin (PCOS, NOT diabetic). i’ve been told to continue these meds up until the week of surgery and then reevaluate what i need to keep taking.

I too have PCOS and was worried about stopping my birth control for a six weeks due to surgery.

i am 4 weeks post op and start my birth control tomorrow. I had my period during surgery and 3 weeks later I got it again which was right on time! I was surprised that I was regular. And I have been on birth control for 10 years.

My birth control doesn’t affect my weight which is good. It never has. I hope it does not make me gain once I start it tomorrow. I did have a stall the week of my period though; the stall broke 2 days after my period ended

I have pcos and was able to stop my metformin the day before surgery and I didn't have to resume taking it at all. My program wants us to be on birth control though as they don't want us getting pregnant for at least 18 months post op. I have an iud so that wasn't an issue. Why do they not want you on bc?

@alleamarie they only want me off birth control for the surgery because of my BMI and risk of blood clots, that’s the only reason. i’ll resume taking it again after. IUD/implant freaks me out so i’ll stick with the pill if they let me but i’m not sure if the sleeve will change pill absorption or anything. i’m hoping that i can stop my metformin though, i have the WORST shits with it, even though i’ve been on it for years. never went away. i never took it because of that, but when i decided i wanted surgery i figured it would be best to take all my prescribed medications so i started it again and still have the same issue. though my blood work hasn’t changed whether i’ve been on or off it (like my glucose level or whatever) so i’m hoping that just losing weight will allow me to get off of it

@Bryn910 yes i have to stop it because of blood clots. but now that you mention it, i never had a problem with my weight and bc, if anything, it helped me lose weight or maintain. i’ve been on the pill for 8 years now so it will be weird to not take it for a few months. but they’re okay with starting it again? surgery doesn’t change it’s effectiveness or anything?

The pill is fine to take after the sleeve surgery because there is no malabsoprtion with the sleeve. Surgery does not and did not change it’s effectiveness when I had my sleeve 7 years ago. I resumed it and was just fine.

But now that i am a revision of sleeve to bypass I may have to change my birth control from pill to something else I do not ingest because there is malabsorption with the bypass.

I felt no restriction with the sleeve, only lost about 20 pounds and then gained it back. I also developed GERD

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
