Still seeing bariatric for annual appointment?

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

It has almost been 3 years since my sleeve surgery. I am curious how many of you go to your bariatric annual appointments? I am going this year to ensure my bloodwork is still good. Please share if you still go, how may years out you are and why you still go/don't go.

Thanks!

Patricia

I am going on my 4 year anniversary this Oct. I have gone twice a year, every year. The last couple of weeks I've been toying with the idea of NOT going this year, (out of embarrassment). I've gained 20 pounds and even though my surgeon told me at my last visit that it's very common for sleeve patients to regain 10-20 a few years out, it's still difficult to accept. Nothing I do seems to work and if I'm honest, I am not working out as hard as I did the first two years. I will eventually get it together.

I will probably have my general practitioner run the test this year. We'll see.....

This will be my five year annual visit. My surgeon asks we go annually forever for follow up and I intend to do just that.

Why? Blood work for nutritional issues. Accountability. Support and tweaking if necessary.

I will be 4 years post-op in November and I visit my bariatric center annually for lab review and barium swallow (my sleeve hasn't changed much since Year 1, but I still like to see it every year lol). I plan to continue my annual appointments for life. It gives me accountability and peace of mind.

5 years in October for myself and my Husband. We go annually for blood tests and plan on continuing to do this forever. At 3 years we were asked to do a Bone Density test and all was fine. We haven’t been asked to have anything extra done this year. I think by having to go back each year it keeps us on track

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
