So I'm curious what others have done to get through the liquid stage? I am 5 days post op and I'm doing great, I really don't feel hungry but this puts me at almost 1 week without any solid food. I know this is all in my head but I can be around food, even help prepare food for others no problem, but when I see others actually eating that food my cravings kick in. Again I don't feel hungry, but I get almost depressed, kind of angry at just the idea of not being able to actually EAT rather than drinking my food. Any tips or tricks for getting over this hurdle?

I found liquids to be really challenging. It does get better once you can chew a bit of something. I asked my husband and sons not to eat in front of me. Not forever, just in the beginning when I was struggling. Maybe it was selfish, but I had to do whatever was necessary for me to succeed. Sometimes I could be distracted if I ate something a bit solid, like a popsicle. Also, if you're not on Clear Liquids, Soups were great. I personally loved the Roasted red pepper Soup I found at Target. (It comes in a carton on the soup aisle.) Since soups aren't sweet, my brain was willing to think of them as a meal. Made me feel a little less deprived.

But, overall, you just really need to power through the liquid stage. It's hard.

The liquid phase is harder than recovering from surgery. You have to be determined to get through it. It's all mental. When I was on that phase, I kept a bottle of Water with me at all times. When the "food" urge hit, I'd take a walk and think about how I'd be able to shop for smaller clothes and how I'd feel without the extra weight.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
