What was your pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! Just trying to get an idea of what a sample pre-op diet looks like! I know it can vary from surgeon to surgeon...

Was it a certain amount of calories? What types of foods? How soon did you start it before surgery? How much did you lose from your pre-op diet?

Thanks in advance for any advice given! :)

I don't do well with dairy so I can't do the milk diet. My pre op diet is high Protein and no carbs. Breakfast is 2 eggs with mushrooms or Tomato, lunch a chicken or tuna salad, evening meal chicken / fish and veggies.
No cheese, no carbs, no alcohol, no chocolate no crisps etc.
Oh I can have 3 pieces of fruit a day.

I started my 2 week diet today. Surgery is the 20th (yes, I know I started a day late). Mine is 3 or 4 Protein Shakes a day, a Protein Bar for break through hunger if needed, a "lean green" dinner. So basically chicken, fish or lean beef and veggies. Tonight it will be salmon and broccoli. I don't have a set portion size for the veggies. At least 64ozs of Clear Liquids a day. Day before surgery is clear liquids only.

I had to do the Optifast diet. It was 800 calories. 3 shakes a day plus 2 other items (shakes, Soups or bars.) And lots of water! I did mine for 13 days.

No surgeon or program specified pre-op diet here, other than the semi-normal day before GI surgery thing of clear liquids only.

Shame bangers and mash isn't on your pre op diet. maybe that was your downfall like pizza and garlic bread was once mine.

3 Bariatric Fusion shakes per day. I was allowed to snack on 1 SF Jello cup, as much celery as I wanted, and small amounts of watermelon.

I just started mine yesterday. I was down .5 lbs this morning. I got my pre-op diet on Wednesday and was told to start as soon as I could get to the store. My surgery is June 26th so it'll be about 2.5 weeks on the diet.

Meal 1 - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2 scoop whey Protein Powder isolate and 4 oz fruit

Meal 2- RTD Protein Shake or 8oz skim or 1% with whole scoop Protein powder

Meal 3- 6-8oz low fat, light yogurt (preferably Greek) with no fruit chunks <7g sugars and 4oz fruit or veggie

Meal 4 - 1oz nuts or 2TBSP Peanut Butter or 1/2 c Beans or hummus and 4oz fruit or veggie

Meal 5 - 4 oz protein, 4 oz veggie with 1TBSP raw olive oil and 1/2 c whole grain starch or 1 slice whole grain bread or 1/2 potato

Meal 6 (optional) - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit

3 Hours between each meal and drink 100oz of Water or fluids

So far not too bad. The hardest part is the 100oz of Fluid. While I'm happy that there is some food on my plan, there's a convenience element to just shakes rather than measuring out a bunch of stuff and reading labels, but I guess the point is to get into the habit for after surgery. So the blender, scale, and 4oz containers are my new best friends. =)

I was lucky, due to my BMI being under 50% I had no pre-op diet. Just the stop eating and drinking midnight before restriction.

I will have a 7 day liquid day. Up to 5 Protein Shakes a day and unlimited Water, decaffinated tea, and non-carbonated drinks with less than 20 calories per serving.

Really not looking forward to it but I know it's for the best!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
