Questions I need to ask!

Recommended Posts

Sooo I am meeting with the my doctor soon. He will be performing my surgery. I have a few questions that I am asking him. I am hoping I am not forgetting anything. What questions did you ask your doctor or wished you asked? Anything will be appreciated! :)

Good luck with your appointment. Here are some things I wish I'd asked:

Do they have a nutritionist on staff who can answer your questions or do they refer you to someone else?

Do they have someone on call outside office hours or will you have to go to the emergency room if a problem arises?

How long will they follow your progress with follow-ups and assistance (like the nutritionist)?

Great questions above. I'll add:

What do you recommend for Constipation?

Yes, constipation! That was horrible!
I wish i would have known with the sleeve surgery i would never be able to take any nsaids , i may have gone with the bypass. my whole body hurts. I was never informed before surgery. I should have done more research. A friend 5 years out does take ibuprofen now, but she didnt have reflux before or after surgery, where mine is horrid! I take protonix 2x a day and carafate at bed, and if needed.

The question I wished I'd asked is: For the 4-6 weeks after surgery, what doctor can I call if I have problems?

My surgeon only takes "surgery related" questions and there's no one else to ask questions.

I'd also ask: Other than complications from the surgery (which I didn't have) what are the potential problems that could happen first 4-6 weeks and beyond that you should be aware of. And don't let them get away with "Everyone's different, it's impossible to say." because there are certain things that are more likely to happen and I wish I'd been aware so I could have prepared ahead of time. My specific problems are Constipation and GERD since the surgery. It's been difficult figuring things out on my own. Thank God for this site!

Do they have a local support group? When does it meet?

Have you had people my age(because I'm not an usual age for surgery) before and how well are they doing now? My particular bariatric center has past patients with their victory stories on their website. And a Wall of Honor on their hall to the Examination Rooms. I plan for,my pictures to be there someday!😛

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
