Ongoing journey before possible surgery

Recommended Posts

I haven't posted or even gotten on the app in a while. I've really been trying to improve myself because I realize my weight is not my only health concern.

I was scheduled for bypass surgery for May 2nd but they told me there was issues with my insurance and cancelled my surgery. After that serious disappointment, over 7 weeks I gained 20 pounds. Two other doctors refused me for surgery because my mental health conditions and eating habits make me "a high risk patient."

So, I took these occurrences to heart and I am now on a treatment plan for my mental illnesses and I do feel better than before. And I've even lost 25 pounds!

I'm now worried that my treatment plan will not be considered acceptable to any surgical team. It's still considered kind of unorthodox but it's a valid plan, that ready does work, put in place by a real doctor.

If you find something that helps you mentally, do you forfeit the physical to fix the mental?

My partner loves me for my mind (I know it's cheesy but in my case it's true) not by body. She never, not once, ever said anything negative about my physical appearance. She doesn't like the idea of me getting surgery.

I wonder if I should bother anymore? I feel better, I feel happier than I was, I work, I have awesome people in my life, I'm just feeling like I'm pushing it to ask for more than I have right now....

I don't know. I guess I needed to just talk. Any advice or opinions would be appreciated

I'm glad you're in a good place right now. It's good to hear that you're seeing a counselor and that your health is improving.

If the changes you are making in your life are moving you forward toward happiness and health, why not continue to pursue that path and see where it leads? If you don't achieve your goals, you can always address surgery at a later date. I'd be surprised if there is anyone here who wouldn't have preferred to achieve their goals without surgery. It's so FOREVER. Speaking for myself, I finally had surgery because I had given up meeting my goals any other way. Surgery is a tool. If you've got plenty of other tools in your toolbox, more power to you!

I think your story is awesome and I wish you all the best, whatever decision you make.

The mental issue could've been the underlying issues. If its working for you just keeping doing what your doing. I've debated several times could I do this on my own? Can you? Yes...its possible...You'll have good and bad days. The decision is ultimately up to you to decide on surgery. Regardless, every little step towards being healthier helps. Don't feel like your pushing it to want to be healthy...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
