Just started eating & not feeling “full”

Recommended Posts

I am a little over 23 days post op & have transitioned from a 3 week liquid diet straight to soft foods. I am only allowed 1 once of whatever I eat. And my food is limited to seafood (no shrimp), eggs & soft cheeses.

I have eaten tuna, string cheese & half boiled egg (all 1 ounce or less) but I don’t get a sensation of feeling full or no signs of “ok that’s enough”.

is this because I am eating so little? Will that sensation come as I am allowed to eat a variety of food, etc.? My NUT didn’t really say anything about feeling full but just to eat an ounce at a time.

I see so many people beginning their food and they are unable to finish because they feel full. And I don’t feel hungry either which is good

So I guess I am just wanting to know when the restriction will come.

YES, YES, YES! They're starting you in the "safe" zone so that you don't throw up or experience the dreaded foamies! They are keeping you safely under your max for now. Be thankful, especially if you aren't hungry. My instructions were 1-2 oz. and, believe me, 2 oz. was definitely too much! Foamies! Gross!

A little scared to ask..what's the foams?

Foamies are mouthful after mouthful of slimy spit. You can't swallow because you're too full, so you have to keep spitting it out. It can last for 2 hours, in my experience. It comes along with that queasy tingle that you get when you're going to throw up, but you don't throw up. Absolutely gross!

Ok excellent! I was so worried. It does make sense as well. Thanks!

gross - is that when you've over eaten?

Yes. I've still got "eyes bigger than belly" disease. That one extra bite is dearly paid for! Think of Ron Weasley and the slugs!

so how does your food day look Orchids?

I'm the wrong person to ask. I've still got extreme issues with any real solid foods. Even 3 months out, I can only eat about 1 oz. of Protein at a time, no matter how small the pieces are or how well it is chewed. And sometimes it still hurts for an hour or so afterwards. A couple of nurses have commented that my pouch may be extremely small. I am worn out. I've pretty much given up on "regular" foods right now and will stay on soups/stews for a while. I made chicken/white bean chili for dinner last night with ground chicken (easier to handle) and also a big pot of chicken/vegetable Soup. I eat yogurt 2-3 times/day. Overall, my food progression is pretty slow. Other people can give you a much better idea of the volume you should be able to tolerate.

I’m 7 months out and I do not have a full feeling at all! I keep my portions small, 3-4 oz., and I’m satisfied. However, I could eat a lot more!! Im vegan, so I eat a lot of Beans and veggies, plus a Protein Shake once a day.

All the best with your new tummy! Congratulations!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
