toodlerue 455 Posted June 2, 2018 I miss straws! I had back surgery 5 years ago & I got used to drinking from a cup with a lid & a straw. I have gas & bloating so bad I don’t want to add anymore air into my system. I also miss making Protein Shakes in my Nutribullett. Is seems to make the shake too airy & I get more bloated! Some posters let their shakes "settle" for a while to let a lot of the air bubbles pop. Maybe that would help? 1 Wanda247 reacted to this
Screwballski 540 Posted June 3, 2018 I am afraid of ice touching my face when I drink. For real. This “no straw” thing is my personal hell! 🙄🤷♀️ 1 KatallacStrong reacted to this
Screwballski 540 Posted June 3, 2018 On the bright side, it cuts down on the wrinkles around the mouth that frequent straw users get (same as Smoker’s wrinkles). So there’s that. 👍 2 Orchids&Dragons and KCwithGSV reacted to this

StrawberryLaray 33 Posted June 4, 2018 My surgeon said the no straw thing has no research behind it and they stopped telling patients that a while back. They said they have never had any issue with any patient using straws. Just fyi.Sent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app 2 sillykitty and Wanda247 reacted to this
StrawberryLaray 33 Posted June 4, 2018 But it's true they are bad for the environment. I was given a cup with a reusable straw at the hospital. It was bendy. I kind of liked that. I feel the same about blending the shakes. Most bloated I have felt ever! Never again lolSent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app 1 sleevedinschool reacted to this

Never again lol Sent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app The reusable straws are just so hard to clean, though. I did buy the long, skinny brush to wash inside the straws, but I only clean them about once a week. Probably not sanitary enough.
sillykitty 10,776 Posted June 4, 2018 My program has noting against straws or blended drinks. I have had no issues with either. 1 Wanda247 reacted to this
TakingABreak 2,733 Posted June 4, 2018 I drink from a straw all the time, and have a blended Protein smoothie every day, also drank from a straw. If I'm extra gassy because of that, I don't notice it. I do have gas, but its become a part of normalcy for me.
Pearldrop 164 Posted June 4, 2018 I was told to avoid straws as well, so I bought a sippy cup, like I had as a kid. Hoping this will slow my drinking rate, and I can then progress to my bottle 1 Wanda247 reacted to this
MIZ60 1,291 Posted June 5, 2018 I have used straws since the day I got home from the hospital and have no gas problems or other issues. I would assume that the theory is that you swallow too much air with a straw?? Maybe when I was a kid..... 2 Wanda247 and yvilla2 reacted to this
RitcheeF 1 Posted June 5, 2018 I have used straws since day one. I have had no issues. They even gave me one in the Hospital. 1 yvilla2 reacted to this
Matt Z 4,139 Posted June 5, 2018 I've used straws post surgery, I do try to avoid them, but only for environmental reasons. I haven't noticed much if any added gas using a straw over not, just don't guzzle. 2 Matt Z and Wanda247 reacted to this
YeahOkay31 651 Posted June 5, 2018 I was told no straws at my pre-op class, and then yesterday at my 5 week follow-up class they said straws are okay again. I am using one now just to try to get more liquid in. Eventually I will just get a cup with a reusable straw. 1 Wanda247 reacted to this
