My first hunger pang...so soon? Making me nervous

Recommended Posts

Hi!

So I had my gastric bypass on Monday and I’m on day 4 but I already felt my first hunger pang today and it freaked me out! I’m so scared of not being fulfilled by my full liquid diet or having my cravings creep back up.

Is this normal? I’m doing about 5 med cups (30ml) per meal right now and I always feel full afterwards.

Btw I haven’t lost any weight yet...when do you start dropping pounds??

thanks in advance :)

Congrats on your surgery! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

You can't expect the liquid diet to fill you up except in the very beginning when your stomach is very swollen so it takes a while for liquids to pass through. Otherwise, the liquid just shoots right through. Hunger depends on the individual. Some people have very little hunger right from the get go. Others are quite hungry and the early liquid stages are difficult for them. No one knows what camp they're in until surgery. A trick I learned from another poster - If you're hungry for something specific (especially if you just saw a savory commercial on tv) it's probably head hunger and you should try to distract yourself. If you feel hungry and any number of healthy options would satisfy, it's probably real hunger and you should eat.

Weight - You're still chock-full of hospital liquids right now. You're lucky if you're not up 5 pounds. It can easily take a couple weeks or longer for the fluids and even longer for the swelling.

Good luck, hope all goes well!

Everything is normal. Relax. You're doing great. (I was starving right after surgery..some people are. Some people get lucky and get a break from hunger, but some don't)

Weight will start to move in the next few days:)

Thanks Orchids! I had my surgery on Friday and was wondering about the retention of Fluid after surgery. This was so helpful.

I had a few hunger pangs the first few days out, but they went away. I've even had the part of the stomach that's no longer used for food rumble a few times, now THAT was an odd sensation!

So, totally normal, don't stress, just stick to your instructions and get walking!

And Congrats!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
