Day one of 2 week pre-op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

It is near the end of my first day of the 14 day pre-op liquid diet for VSG. My boyfriend is making hamburgers and eating hummus and it sucks. I am continuously reminding myself that yes this will be a stuggle for 2 weeks but I re-remind myself that I have struggled for all of my adult life. 2 weeks is nothing on 7 years or on the rest of my life that I will live.

Is there any advice or tips/tricks that will make this a bit easier? Anything is helpful, thanks!

Going through the same thing. Been making my family hamburgers, hotdogs, steaks, french fries, it's not easy. Keep wishing I could have a bite but I keep thinking that in 4 weeks, I will be able to eat solid foods again too (maybe not french fries but healthier choices). Hang in there. It will pay off in the end.

Thank you! It's tough but we will make it through! Who needs delicious hamburgers anyway?

The two week pre-op diet was pure hell for me. Was harder than surgery. Was harder than the post surgical diet. (at least post surgical...you can see better days getting closer every day)

Dig in and take it a day at a time. An hour at a time if you have to. This is the hard part...but you'll make it! Surgery is the top of the mountain, then a little bit of a tough descent...but it's all down hill from there.

I hope to find a Protein Shake I can tolerate and that I don’t pass out from low blood sugar (I’m diabetic). I heard sugar free popsicles and sugar free Jello are good. Hang in there!!

a friend of mine is doing surgery with me on the same day, she has 3 weeks pre-op and I only have 1 week, so I did the 1st week with her, just as support and too see if I can handle it! OMG!! I whined and cried (not really cried) the whole week!! I stuck to it- lost 12 lbs (she lost 17 her first week), but geez if it wasn't for creamy Tomato Soup, I think I would be dead right now :) and yes it was low fat, low carbs and low sugar but very filling!!

I also couldn't wait to be able to take my gummy vitamins and chocolate calcium!! just to taste the sweets :)

Tomorrow starts my REAL day 1! Surgery is 1 week from today! Luckily, my husband doesn't eat the foods I want and twin 5 year don't eat the things I want either. Don't make dinner of the things that you want or crave. If you are allowed to eat the 4 oz of meat and veggies then make it for everyone! I made very small pieces of chicken with sautéed onion, peppers, and mushrooms- it was very good! I make 4 oz of fliet mion (sp??) and Brussel sprouts, your family can eat chicken and steak- I only at the 4oz of meat twice.

Another thing, make your protien drinks in the blender (the liquid premier tastes the best) and add strawberries or banana, a little almond milk and ice- it will bulk up that shake to more than you can drink!

Its SO hot where I live, I can go get a sugar free snow cone, yum!!

Check with your nutritionist to see is this is allowed. fruit is very high in carbs and will reduce the liver shrinking effect of the pre-op diet. Most pre op diets are extremely carb restricted to shrink the liver for a safer surgery. Almond milk is also high in carbs and should probably be avoided during the presurg diet unless your dietitian says it's ok.

My dietitian would have vetoed the fruit and the almond milk. That doesn't mean everyone's would....but given that there's the conflict with the liver shrink, it's better for each person to ask if it's allowable on their particular program.

Congrats on the 12 pound loss!

Day one of pre-op liquid ... oh my !!! 7 days to go- my choices are Limited as I am a vegetarian I don’t eat broths from meat. It’s really hard just trying not to think about it & staying busy. Can’t believe in 7 days I will have 3 sleeves in stead of just the 2 on my shirts... hang in there everyone... my friend said on the other side it’s just so much easier this is the hard part but the payoff is well worth it!!! You all inspire me to keep going-especially the people doing two and three weeks I’m only one week!!!

Hadn't heard from the doctor that I had been approved for surgery on the 19th two weeks from today and thought maybe I should call and see if they heard anything and what is the typical liquid diet timeline for my particular surgeon- all of them are different. We were talking and she said "OH you are scheduled for the 19th your liquids start TODAY" Luckily I have never been a breakfast/lunch guy- so all I had was a shake this morning- the morning and lunch will be easy, I think the nights will be stinkola. I guess I will just have to deal with it.

May I suggest-- Do not go into the surgery looking forward to WHEN you can eat again.

Instead, concentrate on HOW you eat.

You MUST learn to have a new relationship with food. If you don't change that, you just might be setting yourself up to fail.

Before my surgery, besides being on this forum & reading about the experiences of those who have had the same surgery, I spent a lot of time watching videos on YouTube. There are so many! I have my favorites, of course, but I still check out others.

There are even photos of the actual surgery! Don't watch if you're the squeamish type. LOL!

My point is, you shouldn't go into this as if it's some magic wand. It's a tool. You still have to work.

You MUST get your HEAD in the game!

Im on day 3 of the liquid diet and it’s getting easier. The first day was hell, but yesterday and today have been better. I learned to not let the hunger grab hold of you. Have your shakes at the first sign of cravings. Keep snacking on your sugar free yogurts and puddings, pops etc. Drink lots of Water. Also I added the plain Greek yogurt and that helps curb the hunger a lot.

My first day I was totally miserable, but now I’m managing just fine. I hope it lasts. My surgery is on the 19th and it can’t get here fast enough.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
