Hi everyone,
I’m supposed to have my gastric bypass next week on June 5th. I’m currently in school and can only take the two days off for my hospital stay. I’m gonna be on my feet a lot which is good to avoid post op complications but I’m afraid I’m going to get dehydrated or become too tired. I was wondering if anyone went right back to work after the surgery? Any tips, how the pain was, how you dealt with it? Any information would be great!

Thanks!

Hate to break it to you, but you may not do well after only 2 days off. You’re still going to be on pain meds & it may be difficult to get water/protein in. Not to mention you should be sipping Fluid often. Not doing these things consistently can leave you dehydrated. I was hardcore taking multiple naps at day 3

Why are you only able to take 2 days off. Are you a student in school or a teacher?

I’m a student and this is the beginning of rotations for me so it’s near impossible for me to take time off. My surgery should have been earlier when I had a break but it didn’t work out so here I am.

I agree... I can't imagine working after 2 days. I was barely alive I swear lol honestly you need to be prepared for any outcome. I'm 5 weeks post op and was diagnosed with pneumonia that was picked up in the hospital. I'm on antibiotics and STILL recovering. I hope everything goes well for you but 2days.... that's really not enough time. Most desk workers take at least a week.

I hate to add to the bad news but I was also still down for the count at 2-3 days post-op. I could barely stand without my belly feeling like it was ripping apart from the inside. And I was still having aftereffects from the anesthesia, mostly feeling groggy, a bit confused, and very fatigued. I'm sorry you have to deal with all this at the same time as school - I wish you the best of luck! Maybe you'll be just fine :)

2 days post op... most places keep you in the hospital for 2 days post op (I had surgery on a Wed morning and didn't go home until Friday afternoon). I know my day 3 post op, it still really sucked, sure I could get up and walk a little, but I was VERY tired and really couldn't move much at all and things still hurt very much, I couldn't imagine getting up and down from sitting over and over let alone actually have to think and "be present", You are not allowed to pick up more than 10 lbs for several weeks typically. This sounds like a very bad idea overall, Have you discussed this with your surgical team? If you haven't, you REALLY REALLY REALLY need to.

I agree with everyone's comments. I had surgery on 5/22/18 and was released the next day. I had a revision from sleeve to bypass. Although I had some minor discomfort I forced myself to get up and walk. Just standing at the sink brushing my teeth was uncomfortable. I have a desk job and therefore only took one week off of work. I am back at work today and so far I feel okay. A little discomfort from sitting for long periods of times so I make a point to get up and walk around often. I would check with your surgeon and get cleared prior to return to school. I had restrictions regarding bending, lifting, and twisting. Hope everything goes well and best of luck.

I went back to my desk job working remotely 4 days after surgery. I ended up off the entire next week because of fatigue. It was more than I could handle and I napped a lot which is completely NOT like me. I hope this works out and you don't over do it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
