Nervous about surgery tomorrow - experiences???

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

My surgery is tomorrow and I’m officially in panic mode! What Protein supplements are you guys using? I’m doing some last minute shopping...

My biggest fear for tomorrow is waking up to a breathing tube in my throat after the surgery. They say that they take it out while you are awake but not 100% alert — I don’t know if I trust. Lol. Can anyone share their experiences??? As well, how was your pain level???? Pls share as I’m going nuts with the fear of unknown!!!

thanks :)

I have been fully awake when they take the tube out but you’re so knocked up on meds that I didn’t feel it. I just heard/saw the nurse say “we are taking out your breathing tube so try and cough”. That’s exactly what i did and I was fine. Other times I didn’t feel it at all. I went right back to sleep haha.

You will be fine. The pain meds are heavy during surgery & it takes hours to wear off.

My pain level in recovery was a 2/10. Pain when i got to my own room was about 4/10 or 7/10 depending on how much i moves/walked. But just ask for meds and if you’re due, you’ll get them. For me it was totally tolerable

I remember waking up in PACU with my wife by my side woh her hand on my forehead. It was very peaceful. And the meds during Surgery last for a few hours.

My surgeon used a PCI pain pump so I just clicked the button when ever I needed more. I was out of bed and walking within 6 hours. I switched to oral pain meds the next morning.

Honestly the worst pain I’ve had through the whole experience is a 4/10.

Hi there. I just had my surgery Friday. And all went well. I had no recollection of the breathing tube, just a very sexy hoarse voice for a few hours after—but it really wasn’t a problem. I’ve had no gas pain and my pain overall wasn’t more than I would feel with menstrual camps (sorry fellas).

I did ask my doctor prior to my surgery about gas and he said they do everything that they can to get most of it out. I have to believe he did because I really am not feeling anything. You will be fine. Walk around the ward when they clear you to do so—it really helps. Take care. You’ve got this!

Thank you so much for all of your stories! It does ease my anxiety a bit.

Question: are gummy vitamins okay or is it just liquid or chewables? It doesn’t specify on my info sheet

gummy vitamins have a sugar base, so ⬆raises your carbs, supposedly not assimilated smoothly, most put you on chewables, I guess if you're like me , wearing dentures , and can't chew, the concrete critters, you can crush them, you can then, put them in sugar free pudding, unsweetened applesauce or sugar free cool whip, and spoon with your little baby spoon those suckers in, and most chewable vitamins taste atrocious. That's why you look for one that tastes least obnoxious. Look for reviews from others on here, I think As part of their training bariatric surgeons should taste the things they tell others to ingest. Most never have, and need to be brought down a peg or two. Just Saying!😏

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
