Opinions on peanuts.

Recommended Posts

I'm a big fan of all kinds of nuts, especially peanuts.

Would you consider those fairly healthy? I know they have a lot of Protein but are higher in fat and sodium but those are two things I'm not directly focused on.

I want to buy a canister of Flamin' Hot Peanuts and was curious to know if any of you would do the same?

I do mayo Clinic Diet, so I eat lots of nuts:) The fats are high, but they're good fats...and nuts have lots of Fiber. Nuts in general are an incredibly nutritious power food. Good stuff!

Now, the down side (sorry).... nuts are delicious, but they're also "slider" foods (they'll move quickly through and might not give you a feeling of fullness) and they're insanely high in calories. It's very easy to break the calorie budget on nuts because you don't get that sensation of fullness.

I think getting your Flamin' hot peanuts it totally ok....but I'd be REALLY careful with portion sizes. To get a feel for how quickly the calories add up with nuts, it might be helpful to measure out a whole package into little zip lock baggies of 200 calories each. Take one little baggie instead of the whole package.

Also...consider the flavored Almonds. Almonds have higher Protein and lower calories:)

Go for the unsalted versions if possible. It'll help with ensuring you don't accidentally grab that Water during eating, gotta make sure you keep the 30 mins before / 30 mins after rule going... which isn't easy for spicy or salty foods. And watch the calories as well as stated.

Not sure Bypass folks have "sliders" like Sleeved folks do though...

The one thing to be aware of is amounts, with comfort foods, ESP ones you typically eat without paying attention to what you are doing... you can go overboard without even realizing it. Also, you *might* not have the same tolerance for those hot things after surgery. I've noticed some things just don't sit well anymore, like ginger for instance, just does NOT play will with my new set up. Maybe buy a small $99 bag of them to test out, that way you get your fix and you won't be out a whole can/jar if you can no longer tolerate it.

I love raw, unsalted nuts (esp pistachios) and my liquid-stage post-op belly is just dreaming of the day when I can have them again! :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
