TMI topic.. pre-op protein diet and extreme diarrhea!

Recommended Posts

So.. super TMI but, I’m at a loss here. Im on day 4 of my pre-op diet. I have 10 days to go. I get 3 Protein Shakes a day plus as much clear sugar free liquid and broth as I can stand. I did this diet before for 11 days before I had to reschedule my original surgery date. My problem here is that I have the worst diarrhea I have ever had in my entire life during this diet. I suspect the whey in the shakes and want to know if anyone else had/has this issue? My nutritionist had me switch shakes and same results. Any ideas?

That's a very common issue for high Protein diets with whey. They swapped out you and still have the same issue?

What brands have you tried so far, are they pre-made or powder, if powder what are you using for liquid?

I tried Bariatric Advantage which was the worst! I used Powder with Almond milk, Water, or nonfat lactose free milk. I’m on Premier Protein premades and powder using the same variety of liquid for mixing the powder. Which is less awful but, still not so fun. I’m allowed now to eat one plain serving of Greek yogurt everyday to help and I still have an issue. I’m basically living on Imodium and praying for June 4 to get here quick so I can end this madness.

It's extremely probable that you're lactose intolerant.

The Protein Powder, Premier Protein, yogurt are all completely filled with lactose. And the tummy issues are a classic symptom.

Not sure why the nutritionist didn't figure this out.

Either buy lactaid pills and take them with your current shakes (I recommend taking at least 3 to start and work your way down if capable)

Or buy lactose free Protein Shakes.

Easy fix for a common issue

Try Syntrax powder mixed in Fairlife Milk. I suspect this will help you out a lot.

Syntrax is lactose free as is the fairlife (not to mention that it has higher Protein than plain milk) Plus, Syntrax is a better quality of protein than the premier.

I like the chocolate Truffle and Cookies and Cream best.

Good luck!

If you're talking about syntrax matrix it is most certainly not lactose intolerant, but Syntrax Nectar is.

I'm not sure about the rest of their product lineup

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
