Working out and liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I am on my 3rd day of an 14-day Optifast diet and I am so hungry and tired. I want to workout but I feel I am gonna die lol. Did you workout on your liquid diet ? If so, were you allowed to eat a little more to compensate ? I really want to move especially because I know I won't be able to do so after the surgery.

I did not do any extra exercise while on liquids, I don't think it's advisable. You can walk, etc, but I would honestly avoid any strenuous exercise. Be sure to talk to your surgical team and nutritionist, it's important to work together leading up to your surgery and for a while afterwards until you get back on your feet.

My doc said as long as you feel fine doing it. I just did a recumbent bike, light arm/leg weights (2.5 lbs.) & increased my walking

i wish I would have done some abdominal/back exercises to help strengthen and decrease pain after surgery

I exercise normally during my liquid diet phase. I did have a small carb boost ( Hersey kiss ) (spoonful of Peanut Butter) thirty minutes or so before I lifted....I didn't want to let it go since I knew I'd be down for a few weeks.... I'm two weeks post op.... And miss the weights dearly....

I was on the 14 days of Optifast as well. I just walked. I work a fast paced job as well, so I was running around too. You do NOT get extra to compensate. And don’t worry about exercise after. You’ll be up and walking within a couple hours of surgery (I walked the halls for the whole 24 hours I was in the hospital). Then after surgery I walked 30 minutes a day for the first 3 days, 30 minutes a day twice a day for the next 4 days and I now walk 30 minutes a day 3 times a day, plus whatever housework or whatever else I’m doing. At 14 days out I’ve lost 23 lbs. I’ve had one follow up appt that was 5 days post surgery, but my surgeon doesn’t even think about clearing you for over 10 pound of lifting for at least 3 weeks.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
