Acid reflux?

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

I am 9 weeks post-op today and down about 45 pounds. I’m feeling great, more energy, more confidence and perfect Bloodwork already. My only problem is acid reflux. Since week one, Ive had gurgling and throat noises every time I eat, my doctor said it was reflux and put me on Nexium. I think now it’s getting worse, I gurgle and feel the reflux even when I’m drinking Water. I do drink coffee in the morning and wondering if that could be making it worse. Anyone else have this experience? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I'm three plus years post surgery & still my longest lasting complication is acid. Here's how I manage it: I take an Omeprazole in the morning & a Tums just before bed. Together that allows me to produce less acid & combat the acid my body does produce. Proactive & reactive, if you will. Good luck. You are not alone.

I’m 2 weeks post op and I was producing so much extra acid I was constantly vomiting it up. My doctor put me on protonix in the morning, nexium at night and carafate 4 times a day. No more extra acid!

I would watch some of those types of meds and mess with your kidneys if on them long term. Like the omeprazole. I would just talk to my doctor about those and watch my creatine and gfr through lab work.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
