Starting BMI 35 and question about consult

Recommended Posts

My BMI is a 35/36 right now (this is my calculation based on my own cheap personal scale and the last time I was measured for my height). I have high blood pressure and I take medicine for it. I probably have high cholesterol too but it hasn't been checked in a while. I haven't had my consultation with the surgeon yet. I have only attended the online seminar that is required to learn about the options available to me. I'm curious though if there is a site or section of this site that I can find others that have been approved for surgery with similar stats as mine. I am SO NERVOUS!

Also - what is the first consult like? Do they go over insurance requirements then? What happens right afterward when you leave? Do you go on a diet right away?

My high bmi was 35.4. I had to be super careful not to drop below 35 or my insurance wouldn't cover me. I had to do 6 months of supervised weight loss, and not be able to lost 2 lbs. For other reasons, I had to be self pay VS use insurance.

I and am down a total of 59 lbs, and the Dr told me he thought losing 60 lbs was a realistic expectation. I'm 9 months out and have no regrets.

I would make sure you understand your insurance requirements inside and out. Don't rely on what the surgeon or anyone else tells you, get clarification from your insurance company. When you're on the edge (35/36), you might have to maintain your weight and not lose too much. It depends on what your insurance company wants. 6 months of weigh in? Or a starting weight.

My consult wasn't much different than any other Dr visit. Weigh, BP and vitals, wait, wait and finally see the Dr. Some of the visits would have been with the counselor, and some with the nutritionist. My practice provided me with a binder and setup 6 months worth of appointments and even my surgery date during my consult.

If you're googling or searching, try the keywords low bmi, or lightweight. Good luck!

I was given a 'start this now' diet. Then there was a preop diet based on Bmi. My start now diet was basically the Atkins diet. High Protein, low carb.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
