Does GERD get better or worse after bypass surgery? The nurse practitioner at my Gastroenterologist’s office mentioned that it often gets worse but I could have sworn the gastric doc said it would definitely improve.

I have always read that it gets better. That is the main reason to have bypass over sleeve from what I have read.

My surgeon suggested bypass bc if that. And to be honest, I have seen more and more post of sleeve to bypass posts lately....so anyway my point is I’m having bypass and not sleeve bc of the GERD issue

My surgeon would not do the sleeve for me because he said my GERD would get much worse. I had the gastric bypass revision from Lapband last July and the GERD is completely gone!

I had a feeling the NP was incorrect. I’m going to call the surgeons office to confirm. Amazing how much mis- information there is out there about WLS.

When i was sleeved 6+ years ago, all the info/stats weren't in on the sleeve.

since i didn't have much/any gerd in my "past" life - surgeon said sleeve

would be a good option for me. As others have said, bypass is the way to

go if you have gerd/reflux problems.

Knowledge is Power!!

good luck

I had revision lapband to bypass 12/17. I had horrible gerd before my bypass, but since the surgery I have not had one single episode. The bypass completely solved the problem!!

Thanks for the replies. I’m scheduled for my second EGD in three months to check on my Esophagitis. Earliest I could be approved for WLS would be October/November so trying to learn everything I can. Knowing it would disappear is reassuring. I have a call into my surgeons office but have not received an answer yet.

NP is wrong. Bypass often cures it. Sleeve can make it worse (not always, but often).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
