Stuck on liquids 5 weeks out!

Recommended Posts

I'm going on 5 weeks post-op and can't eat many solids without getting sick. I wake up nauseous and stay that way until around 8pm. I can stand Soups, V8, pickles, zero Powerade and skim milk. Everything else makes me sick. I crave food but get it and get sick. I'm scared I'm not getting Protein and Vitamins that I need. Help!?

Sorry to hear you're struggling. Are you doing any Protein supplements, aka Protein shakes/protein water/protein powder? You shouldn't give up on those until you are getting sufficient protein from other sources. Can you handle Greek yogurt? It's a good source of protein. How about eggs? Also, since you can handle milk, are you using Fairlife milk? It has more protein than regular.

Everyone progresses at their own pace. Lots of people aren't even cleared for solids until 6-8 weeks post-op. Also, don't eat anything solid within 3 hours of bedtime or you increase your chances of reflux and nausea.

Hope this helps!

I can't do any yogurt or egg. I'll try Fairlife tho. I can do about 3 sips of a Protein Drink. At night is the only time I'm not nauseous so I eat around 8p.

Premier Protein has a clear drink at Sam's with 20 g of Protein. Tastes like G2 Gatorade. Maybe you can get some protein in with that. Can you add Protein Powder into the things that you are currently tolerating?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
