Liquid post-op diet sucks

Recommended Posts

I have a few different homemade Soups, I honestly think its more along the line of wanting to chew something. Not even sure about that because I have no hunger and no motivation to eat. So weird!

How far out are you, Kay?

No way around it, liquid diet sucks. I am 8 days out and bored as hell with my food choices.

It is because I enjoy eating good food, how I got here to begin with. 😔

I am trying to look at it like detox for any other addict (drugs/alcohol). Food is gone. Maybe I need to take this time to adjust my relationship with and the way I think about food. I am detoxing from Food, it needs to have less of a hold on me.

That is just my Zen moments, the rest of the time I am grumpy and want something good to eat. Trying for more Zen moments. . . . .

FluffyChix said something in another post that I also try to keep in mind:

Embrace the suck, you will never lose weight this quickly again.

Thing is.... Now while I'm not able to eat food.... I'm looking at all this stuff I want to cook myself and not remotely looking at fast food.... Like...I want to smoke a brisket and saute some zucchini and squash....lol...

Also.... The pre and post liquid diet are really acting like a sort of bad habit detox.... Just up to me to stay the course...

That's a good way to look at. I think I'm mostly bored. So I've been adding some spice to things and have been getting better results.

I had my sleeve on 5-7 and I’m at the point where I can’t take much more of this liquid diet. I wonder if we can have a one Protein Bar and just grind it up and mince it the rest of the way in our mouths. Anyone else have any ideas? I go to my post-op appt this coming Wednesday 5-23 I’m not sure if I have to stay on this liquid diet till then or I can start puréed foods on Monday. Any suggestions?

My schedule was.. first week Fluid, second week thick fluid, then few days soft and rusks, light easy fall in mouth apart crackers then solid.. i was allowed to skip even days because i didnt get enough in in the liquid stage. At some hospitals you eat solid after 5 days...So every surgon, hospital and country differs

The first month after surgery just sucks, except for all the weight loss. That part is good. But trust me . . . it does get better. Slowly.

If you are going to have something a bit past your current liquid phase, make sure it's soft, like eggs or cottage cheese or yogurt. I would definitely not advise a Protein Bar or anything similarly solid, no matter how you break it up or chew it.

I was sleeved on 5/7 and I'm so done with this liquid phase too. I get to start pureed foods Monday and have to do that for 3 weeks then 2 weeks of soft foods and finally solids on June 25! I can't stand the Protein Shakes. They are so sweet and nasty. I started getting a few hunger pains this past week but still don't have the desire to eat because I'm so sick of everything I'm allowed to have at this point. Anyone having a hard time with the Vitamins? I can't stomach them at all. I've been grumpy and moody and regretting this decision half the time. But when I look at pictures of my fat self I'm glad I did it. Hope it gets easier with the pureed stage.

Guess I'll be make ng homemade chicken stock now....lol...

Check into Bone Broth. There are some commercial ones, but you can make your own in a crockpot. It contains collagen and Protein. Some don’t taste that great, but you can simmer them with some onion garlic and celery and it’s quite tasty, as well as good for you.

If you feel lazy Wal-Mart has multiple bone broths and stocks.

In my liquid stage I really loved Trader Joe's Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper Soup. If you don't have a Trader Joe's near you, I think Pacific actually makes it, and you can buy their branded version. I also made and blended lentil soup. I made it well seasoned with herbs and spices. I added a splash of red wine vinegar to my serving. I've also found some of the Soups here on Bariatric Pal to be asty, especially the Beef & Vegetable, chicken w Pasta and Vegan Lentil. All the soups were savory and helped balance all the sweet Protein Drinks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
