Baby wearing post surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi!! I am pre-op, considering either bypass or sleeve. I am wondering how strict the rules are about lifting over 10 lbs after surgery? I have sons who are 1, 3, and 5 yrs old. I baby wear a lot because that's how life happens at our house. How quickly after surgery could I conceivably lift my 1 yr old? All of my babes were c-section, and I was lifting a 28lb 2 yr old within days after the last 2. How quickly were mommas or daddies able to baby wear post-op? We have several Tulas, and I worry about how my son would sit on my stomach if I wore him in front or where the straps would sit if I wear him on back. TIA!!

I am also still pre-op so I can't answer you from experience but I discussed this with the nurse from my program since I have a 2 year old who really loves to be hold, and at least worn. She said to really try to avoid it because even wearing on our backs solicits our abs and it can affect the recovery. Now, I am not sure it's gonna be entirely realistic but I want to avoid it for 2 weeks at least. It is still better than carry in your arm, and lift, your babies.

Your doctor will go along with the usual rule of no lifting/carrying anything over 10 pounds. You may feel ok but it may decrease healing time, bust a stitch or tear your muscles more in the abdominals.

I would just advise you to keep baby/child on lap, cuddle and snuggle until 6 weeks

There’s a fairly high risk of hernia if you lift. The actual limit varies but usually is under 20 lbs. I have 2 young kids and did have to lift the little one a few times in emergencies and I very much felt it. I would assume you won’t be able to hold the baby. They did say if you have to hold them then not picking them up from the floor is best and having them in your lap is fine

How much does your baby weigh and how long post op did you lift him/her ? I am also scared of such emergencies...

The emergency lift was my daughter (almost 2 at the time) and I think she was around 30 lbs. I lifted her from the floor and that was painful. I had carried her a couple of other times but just grabbed her from the crib or changing table and that seemed ok. Not sure on the exact timing, but probably week 3 or 4.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
