Birth control issues?

Recommended Posts

I’ve been on a birth control pill of some sort for most of my 20s. I’ve been having issues with this current one and my regular doctor said it could be an issue with absorption because of my surgery. She said I could try another one, but if that doesn’t work I should consider alternatives aside from the pill like IUDs and what not.

I guess i thought absorption issues were routine with the RNY, but I had never heard of this with the sleeve? At least with bc...with Vitamins and Calcium I was told maaany times. Anyone else had this issue? I have my 6 mo surgery follow up appt at the end of the month so that’ll be a great time to ask his thoughts. But until then here is good :P

((hugs)) No advice. Scary Larry stuff though! Some might have an enteric coating (requires stomach acid to dissolve it). VSG does cut away some of the areas that produce the most amounts of stomach acid. Also VSG, allows for food to exit your tums much quicker--possibly before enteric coated pills are fully dissolved. So I'm thinking that's why.

I know in my doc's practice, she cautions all of her baby-maker patients, to use alternate means of BC. It's mandatory for 18 months with her. On both kinds of surgery.

I was warned about issues with oral birth control due to the absorption issues after RNY. My doctor recommended NuvaRing, because it was less invasive than an IUD. I've been using it for 3 months now. I have an issue with my insurance company retracting payment on my surgery if pregnancy occurs within the first 12 months. So I'm super interested in what people have to say about this topic. I've heard of women with RNY's getting pregnant on birth control.

I got an iud just before surgery, because I was sick of taking pills everyday. I have no regrets, I love the ow failure rate and no periods.

Wondering if you might be a candidate for Nexplanon to just take away the GI absorption issues. I also know several peeps who swear by the Nuvaring. Good luck in finding the best solution for you!

I’m so against the idea of anything being inserted like the IUD or arm one so I’m crossing my fingers this new pill is better! If not I’ll have to go back to the old school way of doing things 😂

What about the Nuvaring or Depo Provera?

I LOVED Depo Provera, but just make sure you really watch your Calcium intake while on it. I didn't like Nuvaring, but there are plenty of people who are happy with it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
