How important was it for you to be mentally prepared for bariatric surgery as well as physically prepared?

Critically important. The surgery fixes your stomach...not your head. If your head isn't straight you can easily make the surgery pointless.

I completely agree. Complete behavioral change is in order with this surgery.

I think it is extremely important that is why I'm glad my program is a 3 year long program, it takes 9 months almost just to get the surgery. Plenty of time to work on lifestyle changes with the nutrition coordintor and work on psychological issues as well with the counselor.

It is huge! Sometimes on these boards you read comments from people who just don't get it, never got it. They really struggle because they were totally unprepared for how hard it could be. Sure, some people have a relatively easy-breezy time, but for most of us, it is really hard work. That's why most surgeons require meetings with a therapist before surgery and encourage you to continue after.

It is a serious mental game. Surgery doesn't change your brain, and you don't wake up with changed habits. It's so important to follow your program to the letter and commit to this for a lifetime. For as much of a struggle it can be, it will also be the best thing you'll ever do.

Extremely
I don't think I will be successful long term without my head in the game so to speak

I’m 8 days out and almost every day I have a mini meltdown moment about something. I’m hungry, what have I done? Or Not super loving thoughts about myself and what got me here....and I say all of this as a really positive person who thinks things are going pretty well, actually.
It’s hard. Some people act like its breezy, but it’s not always, but of course I’m only 8 days out.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
