How long did you drink protein shakes for?

When were you given the okay to get your Protein from food and not shakes? I'm so ready to be off them.

Were you given a surgery diet progression from your dietician? liquids, pureed, soft food and real food stage.

As Jenn1 said most patients are given a diet progression that defines what you can eat and how much food you can consume per meal as a function of time post-op.

After you reach the solid food stage probably around month 3 or 4 post-op, assess your Protein intake. Your daily protein requirement is met by a combination of the amount of protein you obtain from food combined with the amount of protein from protein supplements (protein shakes, protein bars). Right after gastric bypass surgery, the volume of food you consume is minuscule (2 ounces) per meal. But as you get further along, the meal volume increases. Therefore you have a very important option available to you. As a result, you can begin to reduce your reliance on Protein Shakes if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals. I went from 3 protein shakes a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op. But to do this you must know your daily protein intake.

Be aware there is also another option called Protein Bars. It wasn't until the 3rd or 4th month that my nutritionist recommended them. Your stomach may still need a little extra time. A Protein Bar can be too dense early on. I used Quest protein bars. These bars were good in that they had high protein, minimal sugar and also contained Fiber. They also came in a lot of different flavors.

Protein bars are good when you are on the go and can't drag along a blender in order to mix a Protein Shake.

A Quest protein bar contains 220 calories and provides 21 grams of protein. A Muscle Milk Light protein shake [2 scoops of powder in a 16 ounce glass] contains 210 calories and provides 25 grams of protein. So they are comparable.

I still drink 8 ounces of PP with a cup of coffee, iced, in the morning in order to meet my Protein goal. I could technically not do this, but it gives me the flexibility to have cottage cheese, lentils, etc (less dense protein sources) as my protein source for another meal. I am 8 weeks out today.

Thanks for the reply! My NUT hasn't given me the full guide yet. She gives me portions when I see her. I see her on the 18th. Can't wait to be off Protein shakes!

I'm 6 months post op and I try to drink one a day if I'm going to be running around a lot . Ideally I would like to get all of my Protein from foods at this point but I carry a RTD premier shake around at all times just in case life tries to throw a curve ball at me

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
