Woah! Thank goodness for insurance...$25,000

Recommended Posts

Just received the bill for my sleeve surgery on 5/2. My mouth dropped open when I determined the total...$25,000. For some reason, I had assumed surgery was $10,000. Imagine my surprise.

My hospital bills the insurance $36,000 and if you are self-pay the bill is $18,000. Crazy compared to some of the advertised prices. Yes, thank goodness for insurance!!! My plan just started covering it last year.

Tell me about it! That’s about the same for mine. My OPM and deductible would have totaled $9,750, BUT because I’m on some expensive meds (mainly humira) which my insurance charges me $1,300 for each month, I’m only going to have to pay a little over $2500 for the surgery and all that goes with it. And no, I DO NOT pay that for my humira either! I use a savings card which makes my portion $5 but my insurance company still makes it like I’m paying the whole $1300. Ha!

That is great! So happy that your Humira got the bill down for you. I am ending up paying $3300, because that is my OPM. I don't think that I would have done this if my insurance didn't cover it. My family would not have been okay with Mexico and $18,000 is a new car for my 16 year old. It would have been a hard sell. They have seen me drop 40 pounds as recently as a year ago, but of course I couldn't keep it off. Good luck!!! 2 sleeps and its your turn.

Oh I would 100 percent not be doing this even if my OPM was the full $10,000. There’s no way I could afford it. And while I’ll definitely go to Mexico to get 2 missing teeth implants, I’m too worried to get a big surgery done there. I know it’s worked out really well for a lot of people, but I just couldn’t.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
