I have been working towards surgery since the end of last year and started my appointments in January. I’ve finished my nutrition classes, psych evaluation, gallbladder ultrasound, two rounds of blood work, met with the surgeon, everything I have to do. My surgeon’s office is just waiting to get the approval letter from the psychologist and then they will call me back to schedule my surgery.
Realizing I’m getting this close, though, has me suddenly nervous. If I do this, it will change the way I eat and drink for the rest of my life. The finality of it is making me worried. What if something goes wrong? What if I have complications? What if I regret having the surgery?
I’m 28, close to my highest weight, and feel like this is a last option for me, but I’m worried that something will go wrong or that I’ll be one of the few that has complications that make me miserable.
Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have any advice?
Thanks for your help!

Hi! I don't have any advice, but i feel like I'm in the same boat. I finish everything up on Thursday. I'm nervous about the permanent changes of eating. I'm nervous about what if I get denied. Like you said, what if something goes wrong.

I assume with a lifestyle change this big we are normal to be nervous. I think the benefits will out weigh the risks by far. I always tell my girls to "be brave" I need to practice what I preach. Good luck to you!!

I don't know anyone who's had WLS who HASN'T been nervous at some point. You're about to alter your body forever. But rather than freaking out about complications that haven't happened yet, what if you put your focus on the fact that complications WILL happen if you DON'T have weight loss surgery? Take your same mental energy, focus it differently, & you'll achieve a different outcome. Good luck. You are not alone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
