Scale or no scale

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am having band anxiety like so many other newly banded folks. My problem is that I do not have a scale at home. I want to get one, I really really do; but I'm scared to become a slave to the scale. I want to know if I am actually shedding the pounds, but I don't want to be continuously weighing myself either. I just think of the pressure that I will feel to lose weight and how I will react if I don't see any progress. But I feel like I don't go to the doctor enough so that I can be weighed; I would like to be weighed once a week or once every other week. I know this is so stupid to even be bringing up.

Does or did anyone else feel this way and what have you done to overcome it?

I know most will say do not, but I must. I like to see the numbers go down. I know I will be disappointed when they do not and that is probably what everyone is talking about. But, I have to see what is happening, though I know you will also feel it.

I just went to the dietician for my first follow up. She told me straight up to stay off the scale. She said the only time I should get weighed is at the docs office or her office. That is it. So I am stuggling to obey her commands and put the scale away. I was becoming a slave to it, and being disappointed if it had not budged from the last time I got on. So I vote no, don't get a scale.

I was talking to one of my co-workers about this and she reminded me that we have a campus clinic in our building and she thought they would probably let me weigh myself every so often. I had forgot all about it, so I'm glad I brought it up to her. So I can now weigh myself but not have to worry about becoming that slave.

Thanks to everyone who responded, I almost bought a scale.

I try to only weigh myself on Monday mornings. I have gotten on the scale in between but it is a downer. The scale moves up and down daily. I find that the weekly weigh-in is better for me not to get discouraged. I look for other signs such as how my clothes are fitting and the reflexion in the mirror.

I didn't have one up to 6 weeks post op. Now I really regret bringing it back into the house. It makes me feel so up and down. I think I'll get rid of it again. I always feel I have to answer to it.

I would feel like I"d lost a limb without my scales, lol.

I have to KNOW if I've gained even an ounce and get right onto it. OK, so for years I KNEW every single blasted week that I'd gained weight, lol. But compared to the anxiety of *thinking* I'd gained weight and not actually knowing, sheesh, that would have driven me to drink.

For me, I weigh first thing in the morning. I have 3 possible reactions:

1. scale stays the same - quiet satisfaction

2. scale down (even 100g) - yay, increased motivation for the day

3. Scale up slightly - sigh, oh well, work harder.

So it doesnt send me off on a bender or make me feel down or anything. I like weighing daily, I dont think its particularly dysfunctional if you dont react inappopropriately.

But if you think you will get down if you dont like what you see or slack off if you know you're lighter than usual, then yes, I'd avoid it.

I just posted this in another thread. NO SCALE!

I am using a pair of pants to judge not the scale.

Before surgery I designated a pair of white pants that were a hot mess on me! I'm almost 5 weeks out and I can zip and button them without taking out an eye & use of spandex! Most of us know white pants show no mercy and they actually look pretty good. When they are really loose I will pick a new piece of clothing and work my way into that. I have a shirt that I try too but I'm sad to report it is not happening just yet. Clingy and showing the love!

End of the day its up to you girl! If you think you can handle a scale do it, for me it would be a bad thing.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
